After February 16th, many fans revisited some of his most popular works, including the classic film, The Godfather.
Robert Duvall, the recently deceased actor, had a close, working relationship with director Francis Ford Coppola, appearing in many of his films. He famously played Tom Hagen in The Godfather. Interestingly, according to FlixPatrol, the day after Duvall’s passing, The Godfather re-entered the top 10 on Paramount+, landing at number eight. The 1972 film also climbed the charts on the Apple TV store in both Bulgaria and Vietnam.
I was so thrilled when Robert Duvall got recognized with his first Oscar nomination for playing Tom Hagen – he was incredible! It was amazing to see him return for the second movie, and honestly, I was really disappointed he wasn’t in the third one. He really shaped the whole story, and it just didn’t feel the same without him.
Tom Hagen was the adopted son of the Corleone family and often acted as their calm, rational advisor. Unlike many other members of the crime family, he wasn’t prone to violence, and served as a key assistant in all their dealings. However, after Michael Corleone becomes the new leader, Tom’s influence gradually diminishes until he’s ultimately sidelined.
, noting he had died off-screen, but didn’t provide any information as to why.
He wasn’t in the film due to a disagreement over pay. By that point, Duvall was a more well-known actor – he’d even won an Oscar in 1983 for Tender Mercies. He said he would have rejoined the project if he’d been paid a small portion of what Al Pacino was earning, even if he wasn’t the highest-paid actor.
Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Duvall enjoyed a long and fruitful working relationship, most famously collaborating on the first two Godfather films. Before The Godfather, they worked together on the 1969 film The Rain People and The Conversation in 1974. They later joined forces again for the acclaimed 1979 film, Apocalypse Now, which earned Duvall his second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
The Godfather Is Considered One of the Best Films Ever
Often considered one of the greatest films ever made, the 1972 movie was based on Mario Puzo’s hugely popular 1969 mafia novel. Francis Ford Coppola received the American Film Institute’s 50th Life Achievement Award in 2025.
Spielberg declared The Godfather to be the best American movie of all time. He then noted that while many artists receive recognition for their work, the praise for Francis Ford Coppola comes from a uniquely appreciative audience.
Released in 1972, The Godfather featured a star-studded cast including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton. The film tells the story of the Corleone crime family, focusing on their relationships and the battles for control within the family. It spawned two sequels, with The Godfather Part II frequently considered superior to the original. The Godfather Part III is generally regarded as the least successful of the three films.
The Godfather is streaming on Paramount+, as well as for free on Tubi.
