This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Tell Me Lies. Meaghan Oppenheimer, the creator of Tell Me Lies, shares her thoughts on what the future holds for the characters Lucy and Stephen.
Now that it’s confirmed Tell Me Lies won’t have a fourth season, fans are closely examining what happened to the show’s famously troubled couple. In the series finale of the Hulu drama, Lucy (Grace Van Patten) reluctantly agrees to try again with Stephen (Jackson White), despite her strong dislike for him. They drive off together, but Stephen unexpectedly abandons her at a gas station.
On the official Tell Me Lies podcast, creator and executive producer Meaghan Oppenheimer discussed the fate of Stephen and Lucy after the show’s ending. Oppenheimer, who also wrote the finale, thinks Lucy will learn and move on, and that Stephen won’t be revisiting their relationship. Here’s what she had to say:
I believe reaching this low point is exactly what she needs to change. I think she’ll make new friends and improve her life, and ultimately learn and grow from this experience. It seems Steven isn’t going to try to reconnect with her. He wanted to face the consequences of his actions, and now he has, so he won’t be seeking her out again. I truly believe that’s the case.
In an interview with Deadline, Karissa Lee Staples (who plays Lucy on Tell Me Lies) discussed what the future might hold for the show’s characters. She also talked about whether Lucy can rebuild her friendships, particularly with Bree (Catherine Missal), after everything that’s happened.
I believe Pippa and Diana are currently happy together, and though they’re in their late twenties, it’s uncertain if they’ll stay that way long-term. However, I envision them leaving the wedding in a good place, starting a happy relationship. As for Bree and Wrigley, I truly think they’re meant to be. The way they look at each other at the end of the wedding – I even wrote that moment into the script – shows a deep connection. Despite all the drama, I feel they’ll be able to make things work. Now that everything’s out in the open, they have nothing to hide and nothing left to lose, which will allow them to build a genuine relationship.
As a film lover, I get the sense Lucy completely cuts ties with this whole group. She makes her choice at the wedding, and honestly, I think that’s exactly what she needs. They’ve held onto so much resentment towards her, they just couldn’t see how genuinely kind and well-meaning she was. It’s tough watching them come down so hard on her, even if you understand why. But when she finally laughs and gets it – that moment feels like a fresh start. She’ll probably be a little messed up for a while, understandably shaken, but I think she finally gets the clean break she deserves, from everyone, including Brie. Maybe Brie and Lucy can reconnect down the line, in their thirties perhaps, but they both need space right now. As for Stephen, he gets what he wants and moves on, probably onto the next person. And Evan? He needed this to explode in his face. He really didn’t deserve Brie, and this whole situation was a wake-up call for him.
The final episode of the series, directed by Tyne Rafaelli, has sparked a lot of discussion online. Many viewers were hoping Lucy would be the one to end things with Stephen, rather than him causing the breakup. However, some argue the show never really suggested that outcome, as Lucy remained fixated on Stephen even years later, in 2015.
Okay, so as a fan, I was actually pretty satisfied with how things wrapped up for everyone on Tell Me Lies. It felt like, even with all the drama, most of the characters did get a version of a happy ending, even if it wasn’t perfect. We definitely see that Bree and Wrigley are meant to be, despite everything that happened with her engagement. And I was glad to see Pippa and Diana finally get their fresh starts. Even Evan, after his… cake incident, seemed like he could finally move forward without all the secrets weighing him down. And honestly, Stephen? He’s probably convincing himself he came out on top, which, you know, is kind of his thing!
Even for Lucy, as Oppenheimer points out, this experience could be a turning point for significant personal growth. The film deliberately ends without revealing whether she will change, leaving that open to interpretation for the audience and creating a sense of hopeful uncertainty.
