It hasn’t been long since the last season of Stranger Things finished, but one of the show’s most popular actors is already starring in a new sci-fi horror project.
Joe Keery, known for his work in Stranger Things, stars with Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) in the new thriller, Cold Storage. The film is based on a novel by David Koepp, who also wrote the screenplay, and opens in UK cinemas this weekend.
Since both projects are in the same genre, you might assume that’s what drew Joe Keery to take the role. However, he actually filmed ‘Cold Storage’ before finishing ‘Stranger Things,’ and the genre connection wasn’t a major consideration for him at all.
He admitted that he was first drawn to the project because of David Koepp, the screenwriter known for his work on blockbuster films like Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible, Carlito’s Way, Panic Room, and Black Bag. He shared this during a recent interview with RadioTimes.
He added that he’s a big admirer of the artist. He believes the artist’s work has quietly influenced countless filmmakers and has been a subtle but significant force in cinema for the past three decades.
I was really drawn to the character and thought the project would be a lot of fun. That’s what appealed to me, and it wasn’t specifically because of Stranger Things.
I just watched this movie and it’s wild! Joe Keery plays Travis, and he’s working at a storage unit. On his first day with his new coworker, Naomi (Naomi Campbell!), things get crazy when they discover the government was hiding a dangerous, parasitic fungus under the building, and they have to fight it off. It’s a really fun, unexpected ride!
Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville join the cast as the scientists responsible for initially bringing the fungus back from space, and they’re now needed to help solve the crisis.
Neeson shared that, similar to Keery, the script by Koepp was the biggest reason he signed on to the project.
I’ve been following David’s work as a screenwriter for ages, so I was really surprised to find out he’s also a novelist! I picked up ‘Cold Storage’ and absolutely loved it. What’s amazing is how well he adapted it into a screenplay – it just flew by. It’s a proper page-turner, honestly, and has this really nice, subtle humor running through what is otherwise a genuinely thrilling story. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
He also considered the visual effects needed for the movie and praised the final result, saying he saw it recently and thought it was excellent across the board. He especially highlighted the performances of the two young actors, Joe and Georgina, calling them fantastic.
