Mark Gatiss, one of the creators of Sherlock, hinted that a second season of his popular detective series, Bookish, is planned to be quite large in scope.
Both UKTV and PBS were clearly impressed with Mark Gatiss’ detective, Gabriel Book – a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot – and greenlit a second season even before the first one aired in either the UK or the US. The series follows Book, a charming bookseller who secretly works as an amateur detective authorized by the Prime Minister. His London neighborhood becomes a scene of mystery and murder in the years following World War II.
The first season of the show was deeply rooted in the setting of the book, which creator Gatiss used to establish the characters, their connections, and the central conflicts. In an interview with Collider, Gatiss shared that the support from UKTV and PBS allowed him to expand the story and move the action to new locations in the upcoming season.
It’s a much bigger project this time around, but it was great that UKTV and PBS supported it so early on. That allowed us to get ahead and finish filming right before Christmas. Now we can confidently look forward to it airing later this year, and that’s a really positive feeling.
Teasing what’s to come in comparison to season 1, Gatiss said:
The first two episodes of the murder mystery take place on Lane. Then, the film crew arrives there. The third episode in the first series moves the action to a large hotel nearby, but remains relatively close to the original location – it’s important for viewers to stay oriented. The second series expands the scope of the story and moves beyond that initial area.
New photos offer a sneak peek at the next installments, showcasing several new characters. Notably, Rupert Graves, who played Inspector Lestrade in Mark Gatiss’ Sherlock, will be appearing. However, he won’t be reprising that role; instead, he’ll play a new character named Colonel Reggie Winters. Gatiss himself, along with returning cast members Polly Walker, Connor Finch, Buket Kömür, and Elliot Levey, will also be featured.

Season 2 of Bookish will also feature beloved British actors Jason Watkins (McDonald & Dodds) as Harold Sneed, Miranda Richardson (Good Omens) as Duchess Alberta, and Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral) in a mysterious role known only as ‘E’, along with other familiar faces. The new season will consist of six episodes exploring a range of topics – from psychics and tailors to murder mysteries – all set in picturesque German villages.
Mark Gatiss hopes the show continues beyond season two, and has even started writing a third season, even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. He also shared that episodes five and six, which are set in Germany, will delve deeper into the history of Book, including what happened to his past love, Felix – who is also Jack’s father – during the war.
Since Gatiss and the television networks are so enthusiastic about Bookish, we can expect to see many more similar, classic-style murder mysteries in the future.
All six episodes of Bookish season 1 are available to stream via PBS.
