Chris Hemsworth Breaks Silence on Thor’s MCU Future, Hinting at Thor 5

Chris Hemsworth has played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 15 years, first appearing in the 2011 film Thor. Over nine movies (including a brief, uncredited appearance in Doctor Strange), his character has become a central part of the franchise, growing from a founding Avenger into a father determined to protect his daughter’s future. While the recent trailer for Avengers: Doomsday hinted that this might be his final role as Thor, Hemsworth intends to continue playing the character for the time being.

During a recent appearance on the Smartless podcast, Chris Hemsworth revealed he plans to reprise his role as Thor in at least a few more Marvel films. He explained that he’s discussed future possibilities with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who believes audiences now anticipate surprising and unexpected developments for the character. Hemsworth also mentioned they’re exploring some innovative ideas to make the next installment stand out and be different from what’s come before.

Thor 5 Could Be Part of the MCU’s Next Era

While Chris Hemsworth didn’t discuss specifics, he suggested he’ll play Thor in a few more Marvel movies, likely a mix of team-ups like The Avengers and solo adventures, as is typical for the MCU. He’s already indicated he’ll be in Avengers: Secret Wars, which makes sense given Thor’s growing importance in the lead-up to the Doomsday storyline. Unless something drastic happens to the character, it would be surprising not to see Thor involved in the final battle against Doctor Doom – he’s simply too central a figure to exclude.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following the buzz around Avengers: Secret Wars, and it seems like Marvel is planning a bit of a fresh start for the MCU. A lot of us figured that Secret Wars might be a way to wrap things up for the original Avengers, but it sounds like Chris Hemsworth is definitely sticking around! He wasn’t so sure about a Thor 5 last year, saying he wanted to see how things played out with the Doomsday storyline before committing. But now, it seems like his talks with Marvel have gone well, and he’s excited to continue playing Thor. That’s fantastic news for any of us who love seeing him wield the hammer!

It’s likely Chris Hemsworth had important conversations with Marvel’s Kevin Feige about the direction of the Thor movies. Hemsworth had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the heavy comedy in Thor: Love and Thunder, feeling he’d overdone the improvisation and become a caricature of himself. He probably wouldn’t have agreed to return for future films unless the tone changed. The more serious feel of the Doomsday teaser suggests this is happening, hinting at a more emotional story arc for Thor. Given what’s happening in his personal life – now a guardian to a child – it makes sense for Thor to be portrayed with more sincerity.

It makes sense that Marvel wants Chris Hemsworth to continue playing Thor. He’s still one of their most popular characters, and with recent movies not performing as well at the box office, another Thor film feels like a pretty safe bet. Even though Love and Thunder had mixed reactions, it still made over $760 million worldwide, suggesting a fifth film could be very successful. However, to keep the character interesting for years to come, it’s important to shake things up. Just like Ragnarok revitalized the series after The Dark World, leaning into more dramatic storylines could be a good move. It will be exciting to see where they take Thor’s story, and it’s good news that Hemsworth isn’t leaving the MCU anytime soon.
