The Gaelic drama series ‘An t-Eilean’ (The Island) will return for a second season on BBC Alba and iPlayer, with Sorcha Groundsell, known for her role in ‘The Long Shadow’, returning as the main character.
Last year, a four-episode series premiered, centering on detective Kat Crichton (played by Groundsell) and her investigation into a troubled family. A violent murder unravels a web of secrets and lies hidden within the family.
When it premiered last year, ‘An t-Eilean’ was notable as the most expensive Gaelic-language drama ever made for television. Groundsell described the £4 million investment as “hugely important” (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
You know, talking to this actor, who grew up speaking Gaelic, really struck a chord with me. He feels, and I completely agree, that now is the moment to embrace and celebrate our language and culture. It’s not just about preserving something from the past, but recognizing the genuine happiness it brings to so many people – and that’s incredibly inspiring.

Groundsell shared that filming in Gaelic had been challenging to keep up with while she was based in London. She added that many of them felt anxious about how well they were speaking the language.
That actually highlights how crucial it is to take part in events like this. If we constantly feel our Gaelic isn’t good enough, no one will ever get the opportunity to practice and use the language.
“So we have to push through, and we have to reconnect, to keep it alive and to keep it breathing.”
Groundsell’s strong drive will help her return for a second season of An t-Eilean, filming this spring in the Outer Hebrides. The new season will follow Crichton as she hunts another murderer on the Western Isles.

More actors will be announced soon. A key question remains: will Sagar Radia, who gained prominence in the industry, return as DCI Ahmed Halim, Crichton’s boss?
Bill MacLeod, a commissioning editor, shared that the show ‘An t-Eilean’ will take viewers back to a stunning and wild location, with a gripping story full of unexpected turns that will keep them hooked until the very end.
Arabella Page Croft, from Black Camel Pictures, said they are excited to start working on this new, suspenseful mystery set in the Hebrides, featuring Detective Sergeant Kat Crichton as the lead investigator.
An t-Eilean / The Island is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
