Get ready for Toy Story 5! The movie reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and all your favorite toys from Andy’s room – and from Bonnie’s adventures too. You can expect to hear the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack again, alongside returning cast members like Tony Hale as Forky and Bonnie Hunt as Holly.
While most of the original cast will return for Toy Story 5, some key characters will have new voice actors. This change happened with both longtime favorites and more recently added characters. In most cases, the original actors had passed away before production began. However, that wasn’t the reason for every recast.
4. Mr. Potato Head
Mr. Potato Head has been a beloved character since the very first Toy Story movie. For the first four films, the voice of Mr. Potato Head was provided by Don Rickles. Sadly, Rickles passed away in 2017 at the age of 90. Toy Story 4 was able to use previously recorded lines from Rickles, but Pixar decided to find a new actor to voice the character going forward.
Jeff Bergman is the new voice of Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story 5. He’s a very experienced voice actor, currently known for voicing Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters, as well as roles in Hanna-Barbera cartoons. This is his first project with Pixar, and you can hear his take on Mr. Potato Head in the official Toy Story 5 trailer.
3. Mrs. Potato Head
I always thought it was a sweet little detail that Molly got a Mrs. Potato Head at the end of the first Toy Story. But it was Toy Story 2 where we really met her! Estelle Harris was absolutely perfect voicing her – she brought so much warmth to Mr. Potato Head’s partner. She played her through all four movies, and sadly, Toy Story 4 ended up being her last role. She passed away in 2022 at 93, and it was a real loss.
Rather than finding ways to bring back the original actress, Pixar has chosen Anna Vocino to voice Mrs. Potato Head in Toy Story 5. Vocino is a seasoned voice actor with experience in video games like The Last of Us: Part II, television shows such as Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
2. Combat Carl
Though many associate Combat Carl with Toy Story 4 – where Carl Weathers voiced the action figure and officially joined the series (after a brief appearance in the first Toy Story film) – he actually first appeared in the 2013 TV special Toy Story of Terror! Carl Weathers returned to voice three versions of the character in Toy Story 4 and was scheduled to reprise the role in the upcoming fifth movie, but sadly passed away in 2024 at the age of 76.
It’s been public knowledge since 2025 that Ernie Hudson would be replacing Carl Weathers as the voice of Combat Carl in Toy Story 5. However, Hudson recently shared with TODAY that he only learned Weathers had previously played the character after he had already accepted the role.
I was thrilled to get the job, and it was a surprise to later learn I was filling in for my friend, Carl Weathers – he’s a fantastic person. The producers didn’t mention it initially, probably because they wanted me to approach the role with my own unique interpretation. I’m really glad to be involved.
1. Bonnie
Bonnie has been an important part of the Toy Story series ever since she first appeared in Toy Story 3, and the toys officially became hers in Toy Story 4. Because so much time passes between the movies, the actress who voices Bonnie has changed with each new film, and that will be the case again with Toy Story 5.
Scarlett Spears is the new voice of Bonnie in Toy Story 5. You might recognize her as the actress who played young Glinda in Wicked: For Good. Previously, Bonnie was voiced by Madeleine McGraw in Toy Story 4 and Emily Hahn in Toy Story 3.
Currently, Mr. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, Combat Carl, and Bonnie are the only characters confirmed to be recast for Toy Story 5. The rest of the cast will either be played by the original actors or by new performers.
