Netflix Just Added an Overlooked Zombie Movie From the 2010s

If you enjoy zombie movies like World War Z, Train to Busan, and Warm Bodies, you might have missed this excellent, but lesser-known, film now available on Netflix. Netflix has been adding a lot of new content lately, including Independence Day and all five seasons of Search Party, and they’ve recently added this hidden zombie gem to their collection.

The 2014 zombie comedy Life After Beth, directed by Jeff Baena and starring Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, Molly Shannon, and John C. Reilly, is now available on Netflix. It arrived on the streaming service on February 19th. The film follows Zach, who’s heartbroken when his girlfriend, Beth, unexpectedly dies. His grief turns to confusion and then terror when she comes back to life, only to begin a frightening transformation into a zombie.

Despite low scores from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, Life After Beth is actually a surprisingly good movie. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of other zombie films from the same period, it’s still worth checking out. What makes it special is its charming and quirky approach, and how it uses the zombie apocalypse as a way to explore themes of grief, relationship problems, and learning to move on. It’s a surprisingly moving film that stands out from typical, gore-filled zombie movies.

Life After Beth is a unique blend of comedy and heartbreak. Instead of relying on typical zombie movie thrills and scares, it takes a slower, more thoughtful approach, using the supernatural to examine how relationships can become unhealthy, even when someone has passed away. The film finds humor in its strange and awkward situations – like Beth’s love of smooth jazz to calm her temper, and her parents’ refusal to believe she’s a zombie. It’s a character-focused zombie movie with strong performances, especially from Aubrey Plaza, who convincingly portrays a woman transforming from a typical young adult into a demanding, unpredictable, and destructive undead being.

What’s New on Netflix?

Several new titles became available on Netflix in February, including the movies Life After Beth, The Iron Claw, and Wakefield. Other films added to the streaming service this month were Ex Machina, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, You’ve Got Mail, and Zero Dark Thirty. For families, Netflix also added the first two How to Train Your Dragon movies, the 2025 remake, and all three Night at the Museum films.
