7 Best Shonen Series That Get Better With Each Arc

Anime and manga aimed at young boys, known as ‘Shonen,’ is incredibly popular and covers a huge range of genres – from fantasy and adventure to sports stories. It attracts fans of all ages, not just its intended audience. Iconic series like Dragon Ball and Naruto fall into this category and are famous worldwide. However, many series struggle to stay consistently good, or to become even more captivating as the story progresses.

It’s common for even popular TV shows to have a weak point somewhere in their storyline, which can be frustrating for viewers who’ve invested time in them. However, the Shonen genre has given us a number of truly excellent series that consistently deliver and rarely disappoint.

7) Haikyu!!

This highly praised sports series centers on a high school volleyball team and their quest to reach the Spring Nationals tournament. It starts with Shoyo Hinata’s ambition to become a great player, and quickly introduces a diverse cast of characters, each with unique goals. Viewers witness the team’s development through intense matches, and the story culminates in a critically acclaimed final arc that takes place several years after they graduate high school.

6) Spy x Family

Spy x Family is an ongoing manga that consistently becomes more captivating with each story arc, especially as the series deepens the mysteries surrounding its main villain. While the story unfolds in self-contained episodes, it follows a central plot through characters who are all concealing their true identities. After seven years, it’s clear the series continues to get better, and still has many unanswered questions.

5) D. Gray-Man

The Shonen series Rise, which started in 2004, hasn’t always had an easy run – it’s switched magazines a few times before finding a home in Jump SQ. Over the years, creator Katsura Hoshino’s artwork has dramatically improved, and fans have enjoyed watching her style develop. Plus, the story is currently stronger than ever, especially since the protagonist’s secret identity was revealed.

4) Gintama

Watching Gintama was a real emotional rollercoaster. It starts out as a hilarious comedy, full of silly everyday situations with the main characters. It’s also a clever parody, poking fun at and paying tribute to lots of other popular action series. But as I kept watching, the story took some unexpectedly dark turns, really digging into the harsh realities of a world riddled with corruption. It’s a show that genuinely surprised me with its depth.

3) Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Currently, Freien: Beyond Journey’s End is the top-rated anime on MyAnimeList, and for good reason. The story centers on a character who wants to better understand human feelings. She’s haunted by regret over losing someone she loved and realizing she never truly knew them. The anime beautifully portrays the value of everyday moments, with occasional action sequences mixed in. Even though the original manga is still being written, it continues to captivate audiences, steadily moving the main character, Frieren, closer to her goal.

2) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The 2003 anime version took liberties with the source material, but the 2009 remake is a more accurate adaptation of the manga and features improved animation. Many fans consider the series to have one of the most satisfying conclusions in Shonen anime, which continues to make it popular. The final story arc is particularly rewarding as the villain’s true motives are revealed, and the heroes are compelled to fight even though they are significantly weaker.

1) One Piece

Since it started in 1997, One Piece is still going strong, even though it’s entered its final arc. The story remains incredibly captivating thanks to its many mysteries, rich history, detailed world, and large cast of characters. While the series is finally starting to reveal secrets about the past, many questions remain. Everything revealed over the years is connected, proving that even the smallest details were carefully planned by the creator.
