Get ready for Toy Story 5! While all your beloved toy characters will be back on the big screen this summer, not all the original actors are returning. Several roles have been recast for the new film, which is set to release in 2026. Here’s a complete list of the characters and actors who have been replaced.
The Toy Story movies are Pixar’s most enduring series, beginning in 1995. Over the past 31 years, three sequels followed, with a fourth released in theaters on June 19th. As time passes, the actors who voice the characters age, so some recasting has been necessary. After Jim Varney, the original voice of Slinky Dog, passed away in 2000, Blake Clark took over the role in Toy Story 3. Similarly, after Don Rickles’ death in 2017, Toy Story 4 used old recordings to bring Mr. Potato Head to life. Now, even more Toy Story characters are being recast.
4) Ernie Hudson is Replacing Carl Weathers as Combat Carl

Combat Carl made his debut in Toy Story 4, voiced by Carl Weathers. He’s an action figure similar to G.I. Joe and quickly becomes part of the group of main toys, befriending Jessie along the way. While it’s not yet clear what his role will be, he is confirmed to return in the next Toy Story movie.
Carl Weathers, known for his roles in Rocky and Predator, passed away on February 2, 2024. This meant a new voice actor was needed for the character Combat Carl in Toy Story 5. Ernie Hudson, who starred in Ghostbusters, has joined the cast to take over the role. Hudson has experience with voice acting, having previously worked on projects like Pound Puppies, Batman: The Animated Series, and Transformers: Prime.
3) Jeff Bergman is Replacing Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head

Don Rickles famously voiced Mr. Potato Head in all four Toy Story films, starting with the original in 1995. Sadly, the beloved comedian and actor passed away in 2017 before the fourth movie was released. Fortunately, Pixar was able to use Rickles’ voice in Toy Story 4 (2019) by skillfully combining existing recordings from the Toy Story franchise and other projects.
Many viewers thought Toy Story 5 would follow the same voice acting pattern as previous films. But that wasn’t what happened. Instead, Jeff Bergman will be voicing the character. Bergman is well-known for his work in Looney Tunes, where he’s voiced iconic characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig. He’s also been in popular projects such as Despicable Me, The LEGO Movie, and American Dad.
2) Anna Vocino is Replacing Estelle Harris as Mrs. Potato Head

It’s not just Mr. Potato Head getting a new voice in Toy Story 5. Mrs. Potato Head, who first appeared in Toy Story 2 in 1999 as a key character, also needs to be recast. The original voice of Mrs. Potato Head was Estelle Harris, known for her roles in shows like Seinfeld and the movie Stand and Deliver. Sadly, Harris passed away in April 2022, making a new voice actor necessary for the fifth Toy Story film.
Anna Vocino is the new voice of Mrs. Potato Head in Toy Story 5. She’s a well-known voice actress with credits in shows like DC Super Hero Girls, Batman: The Killing Joke, and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
1) John Hopkins is Replacing Timothy Dalton as Mr. Pricklepants

Mr. Pricklepants was introduced in the 2010 movie Toy Story 3 as one of Bonnie’s toys. The hedgehog character was voiced by Timothy Dalton, who returned to the role in Toy Story 4. Dalton is well-known for playing James Bond, but he’s also appeared in films and series like Hot Fuzz and the 1970s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Okay, so this is a weird one. Timothy Dalton is still with us, which makes the decision to recast Mr. Pricklepants in Toy Story 5 a bit of a head-scratcher. Apparently, John Hopkins is taking over the role. Now, Hopkins isn’t a stranger to voice work – you might recognize him from shows like Hilda or games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Final Fantasy XVI, and even Hitman. We don’t yet know how big a role Mr. Pricklepants will have in the new movie, but based on Hopkins’ previous work, I’m confident he’ll nail the character.
