Superman played a significant role in launching the DC Universe, but James Gunn has warned that it will take some time before we see key Justice League members like Batman, Flash, and Aquaman appear in the DCU. During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Gunn hinted that he wouldn’t want a movie called “The Brave and the Bold” to be released at the same time as Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II,” which is based on a different storyline. Regarding the Flash and Aquaman, Gunn indicated that it will likely be at least two years before we see the new versions of these characters.
Gunn indicated that it’s unlikely the two Batman films will be released in the same year, based on their development timelines. Furthermore, he mentioned that The Brave and the Bold project is still in its initial stages, with other projects currently more advanced than it.
In October 2027, the second installment of Matt Reeves’ Batman crime saga series, titled “The Batman Part II,” is set to debut. This summer, after a long wait, the script for the sequel was completed by the filmmaker. Casting for “The Batman Part II” is expected to happen in the fall, implying no more production delays. Additionally, it has been mentioned that director James Gunn admires Reeves’ screenplay.
According to Gunn, both “The Brave and the Bold” and a new “Wonder Woman” film are in the process of being penned right now. Neither project will start filming until the scripts have been finalized. Despite some speculations suggesting that “Wonder Woman” is moving quickly and DC Studios is keen on a particular type of actor for the role, Gunn has expressed skepticism about these reports, stating that discussions about casting won’t take place until a script is fully written.
The approach that Gunn has for Flash and Aquaman seems sensible. These characters have been vital components of the DC Extended Universe, each having their own movies as recently as 2023. However, these projects didn’t fare exceptionally well, making it logical to keep them on hold temporarily before reintegrating them into the storyline. This gives DC Studios time to develop a solid plan for both characters, potentially offering something new and exciting that captivates viewers. After a few years, audiences might be eager for a fresh perspective on Flash and Aquaman, especially if the DC Universe can capitalize on Superman’s success with Supergirl and Clayface.
It’s quite intriguing to observe how the storyline of The Batman unfolds, given director Reeves’ plans for a trilogy and the ongoing success of the Batman Epic Crime Saga with films like The Batman (2022) and The Penguin (2021). Fans are eager to see where Reeves is taking his narrative. However, it seems that the iconic character of Batman might not appear in DCU films for a while due to production schedules. Gunn’s project, The Brave and the Bold, isn’t expected until at least 2028. Currently, Gunn is grappling with a situation involving Batman, as he needs to resolve it before moving forward. The idea of an Elseworlds approach sounds promising, but there could be confusion among casual audiences if two different live-action Batman film franchises are active simultaneously, even if they’re released in different years. Let’s hope the situation becomes clearer soon.
