Latest Rumor Claims 2K Sports Plannning New Collge Hoops Game

Thanks to the historic NIL agreement, college athletes can now legally earn money by leveraging their personal brand, opening up opportunities for them to make money while they play college sports. This development has also revived the popular EA Sports College Football game, leading it to become one of the top-selling games of 2024 in its reintroduced season. The success of this game has sparked interest among other series, particularly in college basketball. It’s been revealed that EA Sports is developing a new basketball game, and there are hints about what competitor 2K Sports might be planning as well.

Lately, the NBA 2K official account posted a hint on Twitter that implies their team is creating a brand-new game focused on college basketball. However, fresh information from Sports Business Journal offers additional details about these plans. Since nothing has been confirmed by 2K yet, it’s essential to approach this news with a generous pinch of salt. Still, for college basketball enthusiasts, the prospective announcement is quite exciting!

According to Sports Business Journal’s sources, it appears that 2K Sports is working on a separate college basketball game. This is significant because there were whispers suggesting that 2K might develop a downloadable content (DLC) expansion for NBA 2K26 instead of creating an entirely new game. The report also mentions that over 100 men’s and women’s teams will be featured, with each team receiving a fair market value as part of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreement.

The report indicates that the developer is aiming at every school in Power 4 conferences, which includes those in ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and SEC. This suggests that a variety of schools from men’s and women’s basketball will likely be involved. However, some notable powerhouse programs are not included in this targeting.

If a team with 2K points clings to Power 4 conferences, they might overlook opportunities at institutions such as Memphis, Gonzaga, and Butler – notable powerhouses in recent years. This would also alter the dynamics of the March Madness tournament, giving it a less diverse and unpredictable feel. However, isn’t the essence of March Madness found in the possibility that an underdog team like UMBC or Fairleigh Dickinson could make a surprising deep run?

It’s understandable that it’s challenging for game developers like EA Sports and 2K Sports to include every Division 1 (D1) basketball team in their games given that there are significantly more D1 basketball schools than FBS football teams. With over 364 D1 basketball schools compared to just 134 FBS football teams, the increased licensing fees make it a tough task to secure agreements with all institutions. Here’s hoping both developers can work out a fair arrangement that allows them to deliver an authentic college basketball gaming experience for fans.

At present, these are just unconfirmed reports. It’s hoped that 2K Sports and EA Sports will soon disclose details about their ongoing work on a college basketball game. However, it’s unlikely we’ll get any solid information this year. Fingers crossed, but it appears they might be waiting until the 2026 March Madness tournament to make the announcement, when interest in college basketball is at its highest.
