Heidi Thomas, the writer behind the beloved series Call the Midwife, has crafted many moving stories over its 15 seasons, but the news that Sister Monica Joan’s time is coming to an end is particularly heartbreaking.
The latest episode revealed she’s living with chronic kidney disease, a condition that has no cure.
Dr. Turner (Stephen McGann) cautioned that without convincing the patient to accept treatment, her kidney failure would likely worsen rapidly. Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) sadly agreed, promising to continue caring for her with the same love, but with extra caution.
Judy Parfitt, now 90 years old, has been a part of the popular historical drama since it began. She’s known for her unique humor and dignified presence, making her a beloved character for many viewers – and it’s hard to imagine the show without her.
Thomas told TopMob that while it was “hard” writing the season 15 finale, it was also “beautiful”.
I drew on a lot of personal experiences when creating that episode, which made it feel very meaningful to me. But ultimately, my main focus was on doing the best job possible. This is our only chance to finish this version of the show, and we wanted to make sure it was absolutely perfect.
“So it’s hard and it’s very emotional — not because it’s sad, but because it’s beautiful.”
The show won’t be on this Sunday evening, February 22nd, as it’s been taken off the usual schedule and there are no plans to air a new episode then.

Why isn’t Call the Midwife on this weekend?
The BAFTA Film Awards are back, kicking off awards season! You can watch them on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Sunday, February 22nd, from 7 to 9 PM. Unfortunately, that means a new episode of Call the Midwife will have to wait until next week.
Alan Cumming will host the awards show, which features films like One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme as potential winners.
Lord of the Flies will however air as normal after the ceremony has wrapped.
