A new live-action Tomb Raider series is coming to Prime Video, starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. The show is being produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. While the studio has already shared a first look at Turner as Croft, recent photos from the set have revealed more about the characters, cast, and the show’s world – including the return of one element from a previously cancelled Tomb Raider series.
Recent photos and video published by the Daily Mail show filming of a dramatic knife fight at Turner’s Croft. The footage ends with a first glimpse of Martin Bogg-Semple’s character, Zip, arriving on a motorcycle. After the fight, Croft gathers herself before riding off on the bike. Interestingly, photos also reveal she’s carrying a familiar weapon – the retractable pickaxe previously seen in the cancelled Netflix series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
What Previous Elements and Characters Are Returning in Tomb Raider’s New Live-Action Series?
Although the Legend of Lara Croft series was cut short, it’s great to see some of its ideas carried over to the newer games. The pickaxe became a key part of Lara’s equipment after the Survivor Trilogy, and it’s now considered essential. Legend of Lara Croft cleverly added a retractable design, making it easier for her to carry along with all her other gear on missions.
While Zip appeared in the Netflix series, he originally joined the Tomb Raider games with Tomb Raider: Chronicles. He later returned in Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: Underworld. Throughout the games, including Legend of Lara Croft, Zip served as Lara Croft’s tech expert, and he’ll continue to fill that role in the new Tomb Raider series.
The series will feature Winston, the loyal butler of Croft Manor, portrayed by Bill Paterson. Joining him is Jason Isaacs as Atlas DeMornay, Lara Croft’s uncle.
The dagger Lara holds in the photos is particularly intriguing, as she uses it in the fight. While daggers have appeared in previous video games, it’s difficult to tell if this one is a familiar design or something completely new.
The cast of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft was impressive, featuring Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft, alongside Allen Maldonado, Earl Baylon, Richard Armitage, Nolan North, and Zoe Boyle. While critics gave the show a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers were less enthusiastic, giving it a score of 45%. The series concluded after two seasons last year.
Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is expected later this year.
