Composer Murray Gold shared that Russell T Davies, the head writer for Doctor Who, has created multiple drafts of the script for the Christmas special planned for 2026.
The upcoming special will air after Ncuti Gatwa’s character transforms into a new form, with the iconic Billie Piper returning to the show. It will also be the first episode of Doctor Who following the end of its agreement with Disney. Since it was announced last October, details about the episode have been kept strictly under wraps.
Murray Gold, the composer who returned for the 60th anniversary specials and seasons 14 and 15, recently shared on the Half the Picture podcast that Russell T Davies wrote several different versions of the scripts, depending on how things turned out. Gold admitted he wasn’t even sure if he was supposed to know that.
The Doctor’s transformation into Rose Tyler at the end of ‘The Reality War’ (season 15, episode 8) left a lot of unanswered questions. Notably, Piper was never established as the Doctor, and this has never been clarified since then.

Gold discussed the show’s future, saying, “Doctor Who is at a critical moment, but I’m optimistic that it will launch a fantastic new chapter. I really hope that’s what we see happen.”
In a recent podcast, Gold stated he’d be eager to appear in Doctor Who again. He explained he would never refuse an offer from Russell T Davies, saying he’d always say yes, even if the work was challenging. He described working with Davies as enjoyable.
Murray Gold first started working on Doctor Who when the show returned in 2005, collaborating with Russell T Davies. He composed music for the series for more than 12 years, and revealed he was leaving in 2018.
Production on the Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special is expected to begin at some point this year.
Russell T Davies previously shared with BBC Newsbeat that he’s shown BBC executives the storyline for the special, and their reaction was one of delighted amazement.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
