2 Years Later, Netflix’s One Live-Action Adaptation Is Still a Masterpiece (But Season 2 Could Fall Apart)

Netflix has been exploring various types of entertainment, and in the last ten years, they’ve started making live-action versions of animated shows, anime, and manga. Despite a history of failed live-action adaptations in the entertainment industry, Netflix has recently had a lot of success. A standout example is their live-action version of One Piece, currently the world’s most popular manga, which many believe is the adaptation that finally overcame the challenge of making good live-action remakes.

Everyone was excited for the live-action version of One Piece, but Avatar: The Last Airbender is also creating a lot of excitement, especially since previous attempts to adapt it in Hollywood didn’t go well. The original Avatar, a beloved animated show that premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005, still has a very dedicated fanbase after almost twenty years. So, fans were naturally concerned when a live-action adaptation was announced, given the franchise’s past difficulties. However, this new version is remarkably faithful to the original series.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Is the Ultimate Example of a Great Live-Action Adaptation

Previous attempts to bring this story to life in a live-action movie failed because they tried to tell the whole story in one film and, more importantly, changed the ethnicities of key characters, losing the heart of the original. When Netflix announced its adaptation as a series and showed the cast, it was clear they were aiming for a more accurate and respectful version. Unlike the movie, the series planned to stay true to the source material and tell the complete story without rushing.

The live-action version isn’t a direct copy of the animated series. Looking back, the subtle changes to the story actually set up future plot points. What’s also impressive is that the first season manages to cover everything from the first book of the original series, which previously took about 20 episodes to tell. This allowed the creators to structure it as eight longer episodes on Netflix without leaving out any key details.

The new live-action series is visually impressive thanks to modern technology and special effects, a clear improvement over the 2010 movie. But what really makes it special is the casting – the actors capture the same unique spirit as the original. Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang, is a standout, perfectly embodying the iconic character and winning over audiences. The entire cast enhances the source material with strong performances. All things considered, this adaptation is remarkably well done. However, while Gordon Cormier is the show’s biggest strength, his continued performance could be crucial – and potentially challenging – for the second season, which is expected later this year.

Season 2 of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Is Already Facing a Major Problem

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was a hit with its first season, exceeding many fans’ expectations. However, season two faces a unique problem: the young actor playing Aang, Gordon Cormier, is growing up. Since Aang remains mostly 12 years old throughout the story, only aging a bit towards the end, maintaining that youthful appearance is proving difficult. The first glimpse of the new season already shows Aang looking older, a noticeable change from the innocent 12-year-old viewers saw in season one.

Fans will have to get used to the actor looking a bit older, which some dedicated viewers might not like. As the actor also goes through the challenges of his teenage years and puberty, his voice could change, potentially losing the charming, youthful quality it had in the first season. This demonstrates a key issue with long-running live-action shows: the young actors inevitably grow up.

This is particularly noticeable in Avatar, where the characters don’t seem to age much over the course of the story. Adapting this for Netflix presented a real challenge, and we’ll see how they’ve handled it when Season 2 comes out later this year. Will Netflix change the story to account for this, or will viewers have to accept that the characters remain the same age? Season 2’s release will reveal the answer.
