The Marvel Cinematic Universe revolves around characters facing challenging decisions, with Tony Stark’s journey in Iron Man being a prime example. Trapped by the Ten Rings, instead of succumbing, he constructs a miniature Arc Reactor and Mark I armor to break free. Recognizing his mistakes, he dismantles the weapons manufacturing division of Stark Industries. This change catches Nick Fury’s attention, and following Tony’s victory over Iron Monger, he joins the Avengers Initiative. Later, when Fury assembles his team in The Avengers, it proves to be a wise decision.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about the time when Loki, with his Chitauri army, threatened to annihilate New York City. It was then that Earth’s strongest champions banded together for the first time, uniting to safeguard their home. However, our supposed allies at S.H.I.E.L.D., instead of making things easier, added complexity to an already tense situation with a questionable decision that put countless lives at risk. But as it turned out, there was a solid rationale behind S.H.I.E.L.D.’s seemingly reckless demand.
The World Security Council Goes With the Nuclear Option in The Avengers
Immediately upon Loki arriving on Earth and manipulating Clint Barton and Erik Selvig using his staff, Fury realizes time is of the essence. He summons Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Bruce Banner to assist in locating the trickster god and recovering the Tesseract. Anticipating this move, Loki had planned his capture as a means to unleash the Hulk and establish the conditions for opening a portal for the Chitauri. Despite the setback of Phil Coulson’s death during other operations, the heroes remain determined to engage in battle. They converge on New York City, where Loki and his followers are establishing their base.
After the gate is unlocked, chaos erupts throughout the city as hordes of aliens invade. With no moment to spare for battling Loki or securing the Tesseract, Fury must confront a deluge of extraterrestrials. The World Security Council, to whom Fury reports, orders a subordinate to bomb the city in order to safeguard Earth. Fury questions this action and defies it, but the Council persists and launches a missile toward Manhattan. Fortunately, Iron Man manages to intercept the weapon and employs it to obliterate the Chitauri mothership, thus saving countless lives. Eventually, Fury succeeds in getting his superiors to acknowledge their error, but it transpires that some of them have hidden agendas.
HYDRA Tried to Kill Two Birds With One Missile
The World Security Council is displeased that Fury allowed Thor to retain the Tesseract and escort Loki back to Asgard following the Battle of New York. They wish to oversee super-powered entities and continue enhancing weaponry with the potent artifact, but Fury feels that the Avengers are the world’s best protection at present. This decision unsettles at least two members of the World Security Council, Gideon Malick and Alexander Pierce, who secretly belong to HYDRA. They have long attempted to control Fury and make him serve their interests, and relying on the Avengers doesn’t benefit their agenda.
It seems plausible that Malick, who urges Fury to detonate the nuke, isn’t only targeting the Chitauri but also intends to eliminate the Avengers. With the heroes led by Fury out of action, it becomes simpler for plans such as Project Insight to advance and give HYDRA greater control. It takes Fury until Captain America: The Winter Soldier to recognize that HYDRA has been growing unnoticed around him, and he nearly dooms everyone by supporting Project Insight and aiding in the launch of three helicarriers capable of killing from afar. However, Fury’s faith in the Avengers is rewarded when Captain America intervenes and puts HYDRA to rest again. Despite being hard to decipher, Fury generally makes the right move.
