Early in 2026, several good games—like Nioh 3, Reanimal, Cairn, and MIO: Memories in Orbit—came out, but none felt like a strong Game of the Year contender. Now, a new game launching soon is changing that, and is expected to be a major contender for awards at the end of the year.
Reviews for Resident Evil Requiem are now available, and the scores are overwhelmingly positive. Currently, the game has an average score of 88 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on over 100 reviews from PlayStation 5 players. Versions for Xbox, Switch 2, and PC are scoring even higher, between 90 and 92. This makes Resident Evil Requiem the highest-rated game of 2026 to date, and it’s likely to stay that way for a while.
Can This Game Win GOTY?
Honestly, it’s tough to say if Resident Evil Requiem will actually take Game of the Year. We’re only two months into 2026, and so many amazing games are still coming out! I’m talking about titles like Grand Theft Auto VI, Marvel’s Wolverine, Crimson Desert, Forza Horizon 6, and the new Fable – just to name a few. I’m sure a bunch of these will get incredible reviews, and they could easily knock Resident Evil Requiem off the top spot on Metacritic.
Even if some issues arise, I strongly believe Resident Evil Requiem will receive numerous Game of the Year nominations. Having played and reviewed the game, it’s clear to me that Requiem is among the very best in the Resident Evil series. It definitely deserves consideration as a top game of 2026, and I expect many publications and awards shows will recognize it. Whether it actually wins any awards remains to be seen, but we’ll find out at the end of the year.
