Enjoy arcade racing? Then get ready – this week looks like it’s going to be exciting for fans of the genre!
Genki’s popular racing game, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, is now available on PlayStation 5! While the series first started on the SEGA Saturn, most players will likely remember enjoying it on the PlayStation 2.
I’ve been following this game since it first came out on PC last year, and now it’s finally here! Basically, you get to race on Tokyo’s famous highways, and it’s seriously like something straight out of Initial D – think intense, drift-filled drag racing.
We’re planning to publish a review soon, but it’s not quite finished yet. Keep an eye out for it – it will be available very soon!
We highlighted a big week for arcade racing games on PS5, and there’s another title you should know about: Rave Racer. It’s coming to consoles tomorrow as part of Hamster’s Arcade Archives collection.
This game first launched in 1995, and has never been ported to a console until now.
Here’s how the dev describes it:
This game is a huge improvement over its predecessors, with exciting visuals and enhanced drifting mechanics. It exceeded expectations for the third Ridge Racer game, becoming a major success. The energetic soundtrack perfectly complements the fast-paced racing, delivering on the promise of its title – RAVE!
Beyond playing the game exactly as it was in the arcade, there are several ways to play, including Time Attack and Caravan modes. You can also enjoy local split-screen multiplayer, and PlayStation 5 owners can earn a Platinum Trophy.
The game is coming to PS4 as well, but that version will be a bit different – it’s called Arcade Archives and won’t have features like split-screen. Plus, if you decide you want to play on PS5 later, you’ll need to pay extra to upgrade.
The game will cost $16.99 on the PS5 and $14.99 on the PS4, with a $2.99 PS4-to-PS5 upgrade fee.
