The animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a hit thanks to its unique animation and how well it handled a team of Spider-People from different universes, including fun characters like Peni Parker and Spider-Ham. The film received rave reviews and did well in theaters, setting the stage for more movies. The sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was even more popular, nearly doubling the box office earnings of the first film. Building on this success, Sony Pictures is now making a live-action spin-off movie focused on Spider-Noir – a darker, 1930s version of Spider-Man played by Nicolas Cage.
A fresh trailer for Spider-Noir has been released, showcasing new scenes of Ben Reilly (played by Cage), an older private investigator, as he deals with the gritty and dangerous side of New York City during the Great Depression. This version of Spider-Man is a solitary hero, operating without any other costumed allies, and the trailer portrays him as weary, jaded, and involved with the city’s criminal element. You can watch the trailer below.

Okay, so the first look at this new series immediately throws you into a classic, shadowy world of crime, very much like those old noir films. And it’s clear Nicolas Cage is going to have a lot of fun with this role – we’re getting hints of his signature humor. The really interesting thing is the show is filmed entirely in black and white, which is a bold artistic choice. But don’t worry, the studio says they’ll also offer a color version for those who’d prefer it. It’s a nice compromise, letting everyone enjoy the show in a way that suits them.
Spider-Noir Is a Huge Creative Risk (That We Hope Pays Off)
As a big Spider-Man fan, I’ve been following Sony’s efforts to expand the universe of characters connected to Spider-Man, and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. Their collaboration with Marvel Studios on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films was a huge success – everyone loved them and they made a ton of money. But since then, Sony’s been trying to launch spin-off movies focusing on other characters, and it hasn’t really clicked with audiences. While the Venom movies did well initially, each one made less than the last. Then came Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, and unfortunately, those were all pretty big disappointments, getting slammed by both critics and fans. It makes you wonder what they need to do to really make these other characters shine.
Sony has cancelled several planned projects following a series of disappointments. Both the Silver & Black film, focusing on Black Cat and Silver Sable, and the El Muerto project have been dropped. Even the highly praised animated Spider-Verse series isn’t immune to problems. The ending of the second film upset some fans, and ongoing delays with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse are causing concern. Now, Spider-Noir, featuring Nicolas Cage, is meant to connect the popular animated films with Sony’s struggling live-action Spider-Man universe, hoping to draw attention away from past unsuccessful spin-offs.
Spider-Noir will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to be released in 2026 on MGM+.
