Sony recently revealed the computer specifications needed to play Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and included a noteworthy detail worth mentioning.
It’s been discovered that Guerrilla Games, the studio behind Horizon, created a unique upscaling technology specifically for games built with their Decima engine.
While Decima hasn’t powered many games yet, titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Death Stranding 2 really showcase the incredible visual quality it can achieve.
Guerrilla’s special upscaling technology is called Pico. It was used in Death Stranding 2 and will also be available for players of the new PC version.
Interestingly, the PS5 Pro uses this technology in place of PSSR. Guerrilla Games decided to create their own system rather than use the standard approach.
As Digital Foundry pointed out over a year ago, the performance is outstanding, matching the quality of popular PC upscaling technologies like DLSS.
It’s interesting to see Guerrilla going its own path instead of simply adopting PSSR.
A new version of PlayStation System Software, often called PSSR 2.0, is expected to launch soon, improving the console’s core technology. PS5 Pro owners should watch for updates on this, and it’s also worth seeing how Guerrilla Games utilizes its new upscaling tool within its games going forward.
