Adult Swim’s Smiling Friends to End With Season 3

The creators of the popular Adult Swim show, Smiling Friends, Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, have always indicated the show wouldn’t last indefinitely. Despite the show being renewed for two more seasons, they’ve now announced that only two additional episodes will air before the series ends. Hadel and Cusack recently explained their decision and revealed when viewers can expect the final episode.

Hadel and Cusack announced on social media that they’ve decided to end their show after three seasons. Michael explained that both he and Zach felt creatively exhausted after years of work, but also proud of what they’d accomplished. They felt season three was a natural stopping point. The final two episodes will air on April 12th, so fans won’t have to wait long to see the conclusion of the popular Adult Swim series.

Why is Smiling Friends Ending?

The creators were blunt about why they ended the show, even though Adult Swim had ordered two more seasons. They explained they didn’t want to continue if they weren’t fully passionate about it, saying it wouldn’t be fair to themselves or the viewers to deliver something subpar. According to Hadel, the decision was entirely theirs, and Adult Swim was understanding and supportive.

Good news for fans of Smiling Friends: Michael confirmed that Adult Swim would be open to more episodes if the creators ever decide to return. According to Cusack, Adult Swim told them they’re free to take a break and come back whenever they feel ready – or not at all. They’ve given the team the flexibility to create more episodes in the future if they choose, and have been very supportive of that possibility, though a return isn’t guaranteed.

If you were hoping for a conclusive ending to Charlie and Pim’s story with these last two episodes, you might be disappointed. The creators describe them as simply wrapping up loose ends, rather than providing a true finale. They acknowledge this is frustrating for fans and expressed how difficult it was to deliver the news. They hope viewers understand and appreciate the journey they’ve shared, emphasizing how much they value the support they’ve received and how incredible the experience has been.
