After a month-long wait, the second part of Bridgerton Season 4 finally delivers on Benedict’s proposal to Sophie – and ends with a shocking twist that most viewers won’t see coming. This reveal is a smart move that could recapture the magic of the show’s earlier seasons, bringing back something lost when the identity of Lady Whistledown was revealed. Spoiler alert: This article discusses major plot points from Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2, so turn back now if you haven’t watched it yet!
It’s no surprise that Benedict and Sophie eventually find happiness together in the fourth season of Bridgerton – that’s what viewers expect from this popular Netflix romance. While the show might stray from the original books a bit, it’s comforting to see familiar storylines play out as expected. This season especially borrowed heavily from the Cinderella story, and we all know how that one ends! However, the most captivating parts of the second half of Bridgerton Season 4 aren’t really about Benedict and Sophie at all – they begin with a major revelation.
Bridgerton Season 4 Sets Up A Whistledown Replacement
In the second part of Bridgerton Season 4, Penelope decides to stop writing her Lady Whistledown gossip column after her identity is revealed and causes complications. Now that people can confront her about what she writes, Penelope begins to question whether her column is right and deals with the consequences when someone confronts her about a scandalous rumor. This leads her to try writing novels instead, and eventually, she even gets encouragement from Queen Charlotte, who had been pushing for more sensational gossip.
Just when Benedict and Sophie finally connect in the season finale – thanks to a scheme by Alice Mondrich that gets Sophie accepted by both high society and the Queen – a final voiceover from Lady Whistledown declares, “…and so we are reunited…” But then comes a huge twist, even bigger than finding out Penelope was Whistledown: this isn’t Penelope writing the column anymore. Someone else is posing as Lady Whistledown (this is the second time, following Cressida Cowper’s brief attempt), and it’s clear Bridgerton plans to create a new Whistledown mystery for Season 5. Here’s the complete voiceover, as it’s heard throughout the scene:
It’s wonderful to be back, and this time, I’m approaching things with the same warmth and affection, but from a fresh perspective. I won’t reveal who I am just yet, but trust me – we’re in for a lot of enjoyment together, dear reader!
The new Whistledown storyline isn’t a simple plot device; it cleverly restores the intrigue that vanished when Penelope’s identity was revealed. Revealing Penelope as Lady Whistledown in Season 3 weakened the story, as it eliminated the exciting chase and guessing game that had made her relationship with Colin so compelling. While the show sped through this reveal compared to the books, this new mystery feels like Netflix recognizing that a misstep occurred – though it might have been unavoidable. How we arrived at this correction isn’t crucial; what matters is the exciting possibilities it now opens up.
Who The New Whistledown Could Be In Bridgerton Season 5

Notably, Bridgerton has replaced Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown with a new actor who has a noticeably different, more regional accent. While Netflix hasn’t revealed who this new voice actor is – and the credits don’t list them – the information is likely to come out soon. The change in accent might even be a clue about the true identity of the person hiding behind Lady Whistledown. Could it suggest the character is actually a member of the household staff? Or is it simply a clever way to mislead viewers?
Figuring out who’s behind the Lady Whistledown column is tough, but we can narrow it down. Anyone who understands how much the column bothers the Queen is a strong possibility, which points to Alice Mondrich, Brimsley, and even Lady Danbury – her temporary retirement could be a perfect disguise. Cressida and Eloise are less likely, as Cressida wasn’t good at it and Eloise seems unlikely. It could also be someone who’s lost standing and would benefit from stirring up trouble, though introducing a completely new character would lessen the impact of the reveal. Basically, anyone could be Lady Whistledown right now, and that mystery is exactly what makes it so interesting.
Bridgerton Season 4’s Mid-Credits Scene Hints at Who Could Be The Next Main Character

Unlike the previous three seasons, Season 4 of Bridgerton includes a scene after the credits showing Benedict and Sophie getting married. While it feels like something that could have been the final scene, and the reveal of Lady Whistledown might have been a better post-credits surprise, the wedding scene is important because it gives us a clue about who the next season will focus on and what the storyline might be.
Eloise loves weddings, but as a guest! While her time in the spotlight is approaching on the show, it feels like the series hasn’t really built up her storyline. In the books, she marries Sir Phillip Crane, who had a small role in season one but hasn’t been seen since. For them to end up together, the show would need to develop their connection with several key scenes. However, Bridgerton did quickly move Benedict’s story forward from a carefree bachelor to a devoted husband, so it’s not out of the question. Eloise’s story is next in line to be adapted, even though the show rearranged the order of Colin and Benedict’s storylines.
With John gone, Francesca is poised to become the central character in the next season. Her storyline, originally about a romance with John’s cousin Michael, has been adapted for Netflix by changing Michael’s gender. While there’s already a spark between them, it’s unclear if high society will accept a same-sex relationship, given how scandalous Benedict’s past relationships were treated. This could be the most difficult romance Bridgerton has explored yet, and Francesca’s post-credit scene comment about having already found true love likely isn’t what it seems.
It was a surprising moment when Francesca started talking about her true love, and the camera immediately went to Violet, who was still hurting from her breakup with Lord Anderson. Honestly, I don’t think we’ll get a whole season focused on Violet, though she totally deserves one! But I think seeing Violet open herself up to love again could actually help Francesca come to terms with her complicated feelings for Michaela. Still, remembering what happened with Benedict – how close he came to being completely cut off for marrying Sophie – makes me worry that Francesca’s story might end sadly, with another heartbreaking turn of events.
Bridgerton Season 4’s Ending Reveals A Harsh Truth of the Ton

Benedict and Sophie achieve their happy ending with a marriage that overcomes significant challenges. Benedict resolves the issue of Sophie’s stolen inheritance by exposing Lady Penwood’s deception. Together, they convince the Queen that Sophie is Lord Penwood’s niece, rather than his illegitimate daughter. Although the Queen suspects the story isn’t true, she allows it to stand because she’s entertained by it, ultimately allowing Benedict and Sophie to be together without facing social disapproval due to their different social classes.
The reveal of Sophie’s true parentage is a clever twist, especially considering how firmly established her illegitimacy seemed – though it does verge on being a bit far-fetched. It also gives the Queen a satisfying win. More significantly, it highlights a harsh truth about the world of Bridgerton: everything revolves around appearances, and secrets can be incredibly valuable. Benedict once faced a life of exile because of his feelings for Sophie, but the Queen’s approval of their fabricated history instantly resolves everything. In Bridgerton, truth has always been a tool for power, and if Sophie and the Queen’s involvement were exposed, the entire social order would crumble. Traditionally, honor was considered unshakeable in this series, but now the rules have changed.
Bridgerton Seems To Be Losing Another Main Character

Daphne and Simon have already left the show, and Anthony and Kate now appear only briefly. While Penelope and Colin will definitely be back for Season 5 due to the new storyline about Lady Whistledown, the future of Benedict and Sophie is less certain. The show needs to introduce new main characters, so I expect Benedict and Sophie will either have smaller roles or eventually leave the series. If not right away, it will likely happen soon.
As a huge fan, I was really touched by Lady Danbury’s storyline in the latest season. It was so cleverly done – her whole plan to find Alice as the new lady-in-waiting wasn’t just about the Queen, it was about her finally getting to retire! Seeing her close up her house and leave the Ton felt like a real goodbye, and honestly, it feels like we’re losing Adjoa Andoh, and a major force in the show. She says it might not be forever, but it’s still sad. The good thing about Bridgerton, though, is that whenever a character leaves, they always find a fascinating way to fill the gap, so I’m hopeful we’ll get another compelling character to root for soon.
