After finishing his work as Superman and Geralt of Rivia, Cavill is focusing on reviving classic ’80s franchises, with Voltron and a new take on Highlander currently in development.

Apparently, the new film will closely follow the story of Defender of the Universe, and even better, Henry Cavill is set to play King Alfur, the legendary warrior and former ruler of Altea. I’m really hoping they do the source material justice!
It appears Henry Cavill is fully dedicated to his role, prioritizing realistic filmmaking techniques. According to a report from CNews, he’s pushing for practical effects and intense physical challenges. This includes a stunt nicknamed the “Lion’s Den,” inspired by the Voltron robots. Instead of relying heavily on CGI and green screens to simulate the feeling of piloting these robots, the production team is creating real turbulence. Cavill reportedly insisted on performing the challenging stunt himself, refusing a stunt double, and underwent six weeks of rigorous training to endure the physical demands of the “mechanical beast.”

The set for the “Lions’ Den” scenes was built on a massive soundstage in Australia. The stunt team created a unique machine – a 4-ton, multi-axis simulator – to convincingly show what it would feel like to pilot a giant robot in a fight. It could spin and flip the actor in every direction, capturing their realistic reactions. The simulator was so intense, it was jokingly nicknamed the “vomit comet,” but “Lions’ Den” sounds much more impressive.
Henry Cavill underwent intense physical training for his role, repeatedly experiencing extreme G-forces in a specialized machine – almost like a device used to prepare astronauts for space travel. This dedication, shared by the entire production team, shows a commitment to making the live-action Voltron as realistic as possible. This approach should result in action scenes that feel genuinely authentic, similar to the impressive work Tom Cruise and his team did in Top Gun: Maverick.
Rawson Marshall Thurber, the director behind films like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice, is directing a new Voltron movie. He says the film will introduce Voltron to a new generation with a fresh group of pilots. The movie stars Daniel Quinn-Toye as a young boy who finds one of five robotic lions, and also features Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, and Nathan Jones. Currently, Amazon MGM Studios has not announced a release date.
