Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms told a self-contained story, but it also hinted at a past event that still affects the world of Westeros. The show subtly referenced the First Blackfyre Rebellion, a civil war that happened about 13 years before the main story. This conflict involved Daemon Blackfyre, an illegitimate son, challenging his half-brother, King Daeron II Targaryen, for the Iron Throne. It was a brutal and divisive war, but ultimately the Targaryens won.
The first season of the show included references to historical events like the Battle of the Redgrass Field, a song about the Blackfyre Rebellion, and flashbacks showing the consequences of a battle. Given that the series is based on George R.R. Martin’s books, especially A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, these themes are expected to continue in Season 2. When asked by Variety about the role of the Blackfyre Rebellion in the upcoming season, showrunner and co-creator Ira Parker responded:
As a critic, I’ve been following the development of this series closely, and one thing that really struck me is how the shadow of the Blackfyre Rebellions hangs over everything. It’s not just a historical footnote; these conflicts are woven into the lives of our protagonists, Dunk and Egg, right up until the later stages of their journey. The Second Rebellion, in particular, is a major element in one of the books, and we see hints of it even in the first season. What’s fascinating is that the story takes place about fifteen years after a huge civil war, so there’s still a lot of bitterness and unresolved conflict bubbling under the surface. These aren’t wounds that have healed – they’re very much still open and influencing the characters we meet.
I made a promise to George early on that we wouldn’t invent new storylines. Instead, we’re expanding on the characters and the world he created. We’re approaching this TV show as if he’d written a full novel instead of a shorter story, simply fleshing out what he would have likely included. We avoid adding unrelated adventures and try to keep the focus on the core narrative, keeping each story self-contained.
The Blackfyre Rebellions Will Continue To Be Important, Even Beyond A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2

Without revealing major plot details, the Blackfyre Rebellions will play a significant role in both the second and potentially third seasons of the show. The story for Season 2 is largely based on The Sworn Sword, one of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, and this historical backdrop is important for understanding some of the characters and their motivations.
I’m really excited about the new Dunk and Egg story! It follows them while they’re serving this old knight, Ser Eustace Osgrey, down in the Reach. They end up getting caught in the middle of a silly feud between him and Lady Rohanne Webber. What’s cool is, it looks like the show will finally start digging into the history of the previous rebellion, because that conflict is going to resurface. So we’ll get some much-needed backstory on that whole thing, which I think will add a lot to the story.
The Blackfyre rebellions become a central part of the story in The Mystery Knight, with a new plot for another uprising appearing. Throughout the entire Game of Thrones history, there are actually five Blackfyre Rebellions, and most of them happen while Dunk and Egg are alive. If the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continues for a long time – the creators are hoping for up to fifteen seasons – it could potentially show all of these rebellions in some form.
I’ve always thought the story of the Blackfyre Rebellions would make a great Game of Thrones spinoff, perhaps as a series of standalone stories covering each rebellion. While that might not happen, the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series could offer a similar feel by featuring the rebellions directly or hinting at them in the background.
It would be fantastic to see the first story fully told on screen, perhaps as a limited series. This could bring back some familiar characters as younger versions, serving as a prequel to the existing prequel. It’s a compelling story that deserves to be adapted.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027. You can currently watch all six episodes of the first season on HBO Max.
