A highly-regarded Square Enix RPG has been re-released, and it’s available for free to some players. Determining the best Square Enix RPG is a long-standing debate, often centering around Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7. While some fans prefer Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7‘s wider popularity might give it the advantage. If you’re a Chrono Trigger fan, you’ll be pleased to hear a new version of the classic game is now available.
Square Enix has recently launched a new version of Final Fantasy 7 for PC, available on both Steam and GOG. This release replaces the older version, which is no longer available for purchase. Existing owners of the previous version, known as Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition, can still play it, and will receive the new version as a free update. New players can purchase the updated version for $11.99.
What’s New in the New Version
The 2026 version isn’t drastically different from the 2013 edition, but it does include some improvements. You can now play battles, travel, and certain events at three times the normal speed with the new 3X Speed Mode. Random battles can be turned off, though you’ll still need to complete battles tied to the story to progress. A new Battle Enhancement Mode lets you recover HP and MP, and fill your Limit gauge, during combat. Finally, the game now automatically saves your progress.
While the Final Fantasy 7 remake will likely be popular in 2026, this new release is a great way to revisit the original game and experience a classic RPG as it was first intended. It’s especially welcome since the original version has been unavailable on Steam and GOG for a while.
Keep in mind that older modifications might not be compatible with this new version unless their creators release updates. Some mod creators may not update their work, meaning those mods might remain unusable.
