It’s common for popular and critically acclaimed games to get sequels – there’s already an audience waiting for more! But surprisingly, some amazing games never get a follow-up. This can happen for many reasons, like changes in the gaming market, problems within the development studio, or issues with licensing. Here are five games that were huge hits with players and critics, but never received a sequel, listed in the order they were released.
1) Grim Fandango (1998)

Released in 1998, Grim Fandango is a groundbreaking 3D adventure game from LucasArts. It stands out with its puzzle-solving gameplay and a distinctive world inspired by 1950s American retro-futurism. Critics loved its art style, story, and how it played, making it a favorite among adventure game fans. However, the game came out during a downturn for the genre, which ultimately led LucasArts to stop making adventure games and cancel any plans for a sequel. Thankfully, an updated version with improvements was released on different platforms between 2015 and 2020.
2) Vanquish (2010)

Man, I still remember when Vanquish dropped back in 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It totally blew me away with how different it was from other shooters at the time – super fast-paced and just a blast to play. Critics loved it, players loved it, and it even sold over a million copies, racking up a bunch of awards. But for some reason, we never got a sequel! It got a remastered version for its 10th anniversary, which was cool, but that’s it. Sega probably expected bigger sales, but it wasn’t exactly a flop, so who knows? Maybe someday we’ll get to revisit that universe. I really hope so!
3) Until Dawn (2015)

Until Dawn is a scary survival horror game where eight friends try to survive a night on Blackwood Mountain. What makes it special is that your choices drastically change the story. It was so popular, it spawned a movie, a VR game, and a prequel. Fans have been hoping for a true sequel to continue the story, but the 2024 remake was criticized for not adding much to the original PlayStation 4 game, making it feel unnecessary.
4) Stardew Valley (2016)

It’s hard to believe you haven’t heard of Stardew Valley – it’s become one of the most popular independent games ever made! Created by a single developer, Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the charming farming and life simulation game is still receiving updates ten years after its initial release. With over 50 million copies sold and numerous awards, it’s a huge success, though a sequel hasn’t been made. Currently, Barone is focusing on a completely new game called Haunted Chocolatier, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a Stardew Valley sequel in the future – he just isn’t sure what direction it would take.
5) Marvel’s Midnight Suns (2022)

I absolutely loved Marvel’s Midnight Suns! It came out in 2022 and lets you create your own superhero, ‘The Hunter,’ who teams up with characters from the Midnight Sons, Runaways, and X-Men to fight Lilith and her demons. The gameplay is really unique – it mixes different styles and has awesome cutscenes and strategy. Everyone seemed to agree it was fantastic, and it even got four DLC packs with extra content. Sadly, it looks like we probably won’t get a sequel. Despite all the great reviews, the game didn’t sell very well, and that makes a follow-up pretty unlikely, which is a real bummer.
