Launching a new streaming service is challenging, even for companies like Disney, and Apple TV faced this reality when it entered the market. However, Apple TV has distinguished itself by investing in high-quality science fiction shows and giving them time to build an audience—a strategy that’s paying off. The recent premiere of Pluribus, their most popular show ever, is proof of this success. Now, they’re planning to expand one of their key sci-fi franchises with a new series.
Since its debut, For All Mankind has been a cornerstone of Apple TV+, satisfying sci-fi fans with its unique take on history and offering content unavailable elsewhere. With the fifth season arriving next month, Apple TV+ has now given a first look at Star City, the first spinoff series focusing on the Russian space program. These initial photos suggest the new show will expand the world of For All Mankind and establish it as a full-fledged franchise.

Apple TV’s For All Mankind Becomes a Full Franchise With Star City Spinoff

As a huge fan of For All Mankind, I’m really excited about the new series, Star City! It’s created by the same team – Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Ronald D. Moore – and it’s going to delve deeper into the core of what makes the show so fascinating. You know, the whole premise revolves around a simple ‘what if?’ – what if the Soviets beat us to the moon? That single change has completely reshaped the space race in the show, and Star City promises to explore even more of the ripple effects of that pivotal moment.
The new series, Star City, will tell the story of a pivotal moment in history – the Soviet space program – from the Soviet perspective. Apple TV+ says the show will focus on the cosmonauts, the engineers who worked with them, and the intelligence officers monitoring the program, highlighting the dangers they faced in pushing the boundaries of space exploration.

Star City will debut with its first two episodes on Friday, May 29th, the same day as the season finale of For All Mankind. This launch further establishes the franchise as a major success for Apple TV+. After the premiere, new episodes of Star City will be released weekly, with the first season concluding on Friday, July 10th, on Apple TV.
The new series, Star City, will star a completely fresh cast, featuring several actors viewers may recognize from recent popular TV shows. These include Rhys Ifans (known for House of the Dragon), Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland), Agnes O’Casey (Black Doves), Alice Englert (Bad Behaviour), Solly McLeod (House of the Dragon), Adam Nagaitis (Chernobyl), Ruby Ashbourne Serkis (I, Jack Wright), Josef Davies (Andor), and Priya Kansara (Bridgerton).

The new series, Star City, has a distinctly different visual style than For All Mankind. While the original series had a polished, modern look, Star City appears to embrace a more classic Soviet aesthetic, reminiscent of life behind the Iron Curtain. This new direction, combined with a new cast and an earlier timeline, seems like a smart way to expand the For All Mankind universe and keep Apple TV+ a go-to place for original sci-fi.
