ABC Quietly Confirms The Fate Of Ryan Murphy’s Risque Medical Series After One Year In Limbo

ABC has surprised viewers with news about a medical drama created by Ryan Murphy that had been on hold. Murphy is a prolific producer, best known for shows on streaming services, but he continues to work with traditional television, currently with the successful shows 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville on ABC’s parent company, Disney. He previously launched another medical series with ABC back in 2024.

The show Doctor Odyssey gained attention last season thanks to its wildly creative weekly themes. Starring Joshua Jackson, the series revolved around a luxury cruise ship, The Odyssey, where medical emergencies were a constant occurrence. While it developed a dedicated fanbase with its mix of case-of-the-week stories and character-driven plots, it struggled to reach a broader audience.

ABC Has Removed Doctor Odyssey From Its Official Website

Although Doctor Odyssey didn’t become a huge ratings success right away, it performed reasonably well for ABC. Viewers appreciated its unique premise and the show’s engaging cast, making it a positive addition to the network’s lineup. As a result, many expected it to be renewed for another season in 2025-2026, but that didn’t happen. Since the first season ended in May, the show has remained in limbo, with its future uncertain.

It looks like Disney has officially cancelled Doctor Odyssey. The show has been removed from ABC’s schedule, as reported by @911TVNEWS. You can find screenshots of the website confirming this below.

Despite initial statements that season 2 of Doctor Odyssey wasn’t canceled, ABC has now effectively confirmed the show won’t return. While ABC previously said they still planned to bring it back, the decision rested with the show’s creator, who was focused on other projects. This recent move makes it clear that the network has given up on Doctor Odyssey being part of its future programming.

Can Doctor Odyssey Season 2 Still Happen?

With so many shows being revived or rebooted, a continuation of Doctor Odyssey is definitely possible. However, it hinges on the willingness of creator Murphy to revisit the series if given the opportunity. The show also has plenty of unfinished storylines, leaving room for a second season to explore mysteries like the fate of Jackson’s Max Bankman and whether he was trapped in a sort of limbo while battling COVID-19.

If ABC decides to revive Doctor Odyssey, fitting it into their prime-time schedule will be difficult. 9-1-1: Nashville is performing well in that timeslot and is likely to be renewed through the 2026-2027 season. If there’s no room for it on network television, Disney could potentially stream the show instead. Even a limited run on streaming would at least allow the series to conclude its storyline properly.
