Turning books or other works into movies and TV shows is tough – for every successful new franchise, many others fail. It’s disappointing when this happens, as it often means we’ll never see more stories from that world. But Netflix’s latest thriller series might just save a famously bad movie adaptation, and you can check out the trailer now.
Netflix is creating a series based on Jo Nesbø’s popular Harry Hole detective novels. The trailer suggests the series successfully captures the dark and gritty atmosphere of the books. It appears to be a significant improvement over the 2017 film adaptation, The Snowman, which received very poor reviews (currently rated at only 7% on Rotten Tomatoes).
What Is Detective Hole (And Why Didn’t The Snowman Get The Franchise Right)

The Harry Hole novels by Jo Nesbo are being adapted into a series starring Tobias Santelmann as the troubled detective. Harry is a flawed hero willing to do whatever it takes to solve a case. He’ll face a tough challenge from his arch-enemy, Tom Waaler, a corrupt police officer played by Joel Kinnaman.
This series centers on Harry’s pursuit of a serial killer. Viewers will uncover a story filled with obsession, betrayal, and Harry’s own struggle to balance seeking justice with his desire for revenge.
This new adaptation seems much better than the 2017 film, The Snowman. While The Snowman starred well-known actors like Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, and J.K. Simmons, it was poorly received by critics and didn’t perform well at the box office.
Despite costing $35 million to make, the movie The Snowman only earned $41 million at the box office, and critics didn’t like it. It currently has a very low 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After the film came out, the director, Tomas Alfredson, revealed that a significant portion – between 10 and 15 percent – of the original script wasn’t filmed. This caused problems in post-production, leaving some parts of the story confusing and disjointed.
The popular Jo Nesbo series is starting a new chapter with a fresh TV show. You can watch Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole on Netflix beginning March 26th.
