DWTS’ Julianne Hough Returns to Acting After 8-Year Movie Hiatus

Julianne Hough certainly feels alive on the big screen.

After an eight-year break from leading roles in movies, Dancing With the Stars host Julianne Hough is returning to the big screen in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s new film, The Bride! The movie is a fresh take on the classic story of Frankenstein, originally written by Mary Shelley in 1818, and its famous follow-up, The Bride of Frankenstein. Julianne was very excited to be part of the project.

She told Deadline at the London film premiere, in a video shared on X on February 26th, that she couldn’t have asked for a better project. She described the experience as ‘amazing’.

It was a really special experience in so many ways,” she continued. “Being able to contribute to Maggie’s vision – her powerful message of female empowerment delivered through energetic rock and roll and punk – was incredible. She’s a truly amazing director.”

Julianne was thrilled to finally see the finished movie, especially since she appears in a film within the movie The Bride! She explained that she wasn’t directly involved in making the main film and shared, “I’m experiencing this with all of you for the first time, too.”

Additionally, the actor from Rock of Ages also got to collaborate with Maggie Gyllenhaal and her brother, Jake, who is also part of the project.

Julianne praised Jake, describing him as incredibly professional and experienced. She said he approached their studio session with both humility and enthusiasm, making the collaboration really enjoyable.

I was so thrilled to see Jake in the movie, and even more excited that Maggie got to work with both him and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard! It was really special because it was the first time Maggie and her brother had collaborated on a project since ‘Donnie Darko’ way back in 2001. It meant a lot to see them all together on screen again.

In a December interview with Entertainment Weekly, Maggie said she enjoyed working with both actors, adding that Jake was a particularly welcome addition to the project – ‘like icing on the cake’.

She explained that he joined the production whenever his schedule allowed, and he looked fantastic in a tuxedo. He was a lively presence, dancing, singing, and bringing a lot of humor, kindness, and warmth to the set – everyone enjoyed having him around.

Working with her husband, Peter, who is the father of their two daughters, on such a large-scale film was a wonderful experience for her.

“These are really brilliant actors,” Maggie said. “It’s a total gift to have them.”

Although The Bride! comes out in theaters on March 6th, here’s a look at other movies coming to cinemas near you this year.
