Fans know what to expect from a new Scream movie: nods to other horror films, the established ‘rules’ of surviving a masked killer, plenty of misleading clues, and a reveal of who’s behind the mask – and how many people helped them. Scream 7 follows this formula, offering familiar thrills with a few surprises and a fresh motivation for the Ghostface killer.
Okay, so as a huge Scream fan, I was really excited for Scream 7, especially when I heard Matthew Lillard was coming back as Stu Macher and Scott Foley as Roman Bridger. Everyone thought they were going to be the killers again! But honestly, it was a total twist. The movie ended up having three new Ghostfaces, and their plan was connected to some surprising parts of the Scream story – specifically, it tied back to a couple of sequels I didn’t realize were so important. It was a really clever way to expand the mythology!
Scream 7’s Ending Is Wrapped Up In Two of the Other Sequels

Despite introducing many possible suspects in Scream 7, the Ghostface killers turn out to be unexpected. A major twist happens quickly: one of the killers is hit and killed by a car driven by Gale Weathers within the first 30 minutes. This Ghostface is revealed to be Karl, a completely unknown character with no connection to Sidney or Woodsboro – he’s an escaped patient from a local mental health facility. This random attack only increases Sidney’s suspicion that there’s more than one killer involved.
Sidney was proven right yet again, as the film confirms there are still two Ghostface killers at large. Ethan Embry’s character, Marco – the mental institution employee who shares Karl’s history with Sidney and hints at Stu Macher possibly still being alive – is revealed to be one of them. While Marco orchestrated the use of deepfakes to terrorize Sidney, the true mastermind behind the entire plot is Jessica Bowden, Sidney’s seemingly friendly neighbor, played by Anna Camp.
Jessica’s lengthy villain speech reveals she was influenced by Sidney Prescott’s book, Out of Darkness. This might seem like a minor detail, but longtime Scream fans will remember the book played a crucial role in Scream 4 (2011). Sidney was on a book tour when she returned to Woodsboro, setting the stage for the film’s events. Jessica explains that the book not only helped her deal with her own troubled past—she murdered her abusive husband and successfully avoided consequences, crediting the book with inspiring her—but also sparked an obsession with Sidney herself.
Scream 7 Builds on Scream 6 (And Neve Campbell’s Absence)
Jessica was surprised Sidney didn’t travel to New York to stop the Ghostface killings from Scream 6. She felt Sidney deserved another chance to be the hero. Deeply upset by Sidney’s inaction, Jessica sought help at a mental institution, where she met Marco and, unknowingly, their eventual killer, Karl. From that point on, their actions were carefully monitored.
The new Ghostface killer was motivated by the events of both Scream 4 and Scream 6, leading them to adopt the mask and weapons. Jessica, the killer, had a surprising goal: she hoped her actions would push Tatum, Sidney Prescott’s daughter, to step into the role of the final girl. While the film initially focuses on Sidney’s desire to protect her family, this motivation gets lost in the chaotic climax. Ultimately, Tatum and Sidney escape their captors and defeat the final two Ghostfaces. They kill Marco with a single shot and overwhelm Jessica with a barrage of bullets.
It’s somewhat unexpected that the ending of Scream 7 relies so much on plot points from Scream 4 and Scream 6, especially considering the film had to significantly change direction after Melissa Barrera was let go. Still, it’s a good way to tie things together, even if the connection feels a little weak. At this point in a long horror series like Scream, it’s common for the story to start feeling a bit strained.
