Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upgrade will be released very soon, within the next few weeks, for owners of the PS5 Pro. This feature is the result of collaboration between PlayStation and AMD, building on the technology already seen in AMD FSR 4 on PCs – a project known as Project Amethyst.
The new game Resident Evil Requiem is the first to utilize a technology that Sony says maintains a smooth frame rate and high image quality. According to Masaru Ijuin, a Senior Manager at Capcom, this technology will make details like light reflecting off hair look even sharper than on a standard PlayStation 5.
Several existing games will be improved with a software update to work with the new PSSR technology. After the update, if a game supports the upscaling feature on the PS5 Pro, you’ll be able to choose “Enhanced PSSR Image Quality” for clearer, sharper graphics.
We’ll share more information soon about when the improved PSSR will be released next month. Right now, you can play Resident Evil Requiem on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Our review gave it a 9/10 – we loved the graphics, detailed world, exciting combat, and the way you can play with two different styles. The very end of the game wasn’t quite as strong as the rest, but overall it’s fantastic.
