Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters introduces a frightening new Titan, and it’s partially due to the organization’s own technology. While the giant monsters, or kaiju, were mostly hidden in Season 1, they were kept under control by powerful protectors like Godzilla and Kong. That all changed after the event known as G-Day, forcing Monarch to publicly reveal itself. The first season concluded with Monarch rescuing Cate, May, and Keiko from the monster realm called Axis Mundi, but unfortunately, Lee was left behind.
Two years after the events established in the Monsterverse, the team arrived on Skull Island, the home of Kong. This marked a significant shift for the second season of Monarch. The Titans are no longer hidden; the explosive events of G-Day were just the start, and now these massive creatures are openly causing destruction. Fittingly, the first episode of Season 2 ended with a new Titan appearing from the Axis Mundi – one so powerful that even Kong couldn’t stop it. Disturbingly, Monarch is responsible for its emergence.
Monarch Has Learned How To Access The Axis Mundi

The first season explained how to reach the Axis Mundi: lure a kaiju with radiation. This would make the creature open a vortex – the only way to get there. It’s risky, though, because you have to remove the radiation source before the kaiju appears, forcing it to return home. Skull Island is ideal for Monarch to test this process, as its remote location means any problems won’t affect people.
Monarch and Apex worked for a year on an agreement to try and rescue Cate, May, and Lee. Little did they know, their efforts would actually lead them to Keiko Randa, who everyone thought had been dead for decades, but was actually held captive by the Axis Mundi. Lee gave his life to help them escape, but Cate refused to accept his sacrifice and returned to the research station on Skull Island, determined to open another portal. She succeeded, but her actions brought a new Titan through with it.
Titan X Has Emerged On Earth
Titan X, hinted at in trailers for Monarch Season 2, is the season’s central monster. Flashbacks show it existed on Earth as far back as 1957, where Chilean tribes even worshipped it as a god. It disappeared around 200 years ago, likely pulled into the Axis Mundi by Godzilla. While Titan X doesn’t appear much in the first episode of Monarch, we see it has massive tentacles and, unfortunately, lives in the water. It’s fast enough to evade Kong on Skull Island, swimming away as he angrily roars.
Titan X is unlike any monster we’ve seen in the Godzilla and Kong universe so far. Some fans think it might be similar to Biollante, a creature from the 1989 film Godzilla vs Biollante, but with a completely different backstory – the original Biollante was created through genetic engineering. It’s more probable that Titan X is a brand-new monster, never before seen in these films, which would explain why it’s labeled with an ‘X’ – meaning it’s an unknown element.
In the first episode of Monarch Season 2, a key detail emerges: Titan X was last active around 200 years before the events shown in the flashbacks. This timing aligns with historical accounts of the kraken, a legendary sea monster first documented in 1646. While often linked to a Danish bishop’s description from 1753—a date that matches the flashback period—the kraken is known for its massive tentacles and its habit of dragging ships underwater. If Titan X is the kraken, this could explain its behavior.
It’s clear Monarch didn’t want Titan X roaming free. Because it can swim, escaping Skull Island is simple, allowing it to travel the world. Unlike most kaiju, which are attracted to radiation, Titan X existed long before the atomic age, meaning it operates differently. It’s likely the entire second season of Monarch will focus on containing this dangerous creature before it causes widespread destruction.
Monarch Is the World’s Last Chance After Titan X’s Emergence

The world of Monarch has evolved significantly between its first and second seasons, partly due to a time jump after the characters’ time in the Axis Mundi. The main base of operations is now Outpost 18, a massive ship that Tim is very proud of – he even tried to show off its features to May in the season 2 premiere. This seems to be important, as Monarch now has a fully mobile base capable of tracking and hunting Titan X globally. The whole setup feels reminiscent of Moby Dick, a classic novel from the 19th century, which is when Titan X was last known to be active – a clever and amusing detail.
During the appearance of Titan X, Monarch experiences a terrible loss when Deputy Director Verdugo is struck by a tentacle and killed. This tragedy likely sets the stage for a leadership conflict within Monarch, forcing the current director to take charge. Containing Titan X will require all the help Monarch can find.
