Like any dedicated fanbase, DC’s has its divisions, and a particularly strong disagreement arose after James Gunn’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow premiered, launching the new DC Universe. Supporters of the previous Snyderverse saw it as a challenge to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the film that began the older DC Extended Universe, and the resulting online discussions became quite intense. Now, more than six months later, Zack Snyder has finally shared his thoughts on the new film.
In an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Zack Snyder enthusiastically praised James Gunn’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow, calling it “amazing” and expressing his excitement for the sequel. He also shared his deep respect for Gunn as a filmmaker.
James is a truly unique storyteller. He brilliantly blends mythology and pop culture, creating a distinctive voice that’s both touching and humorous. I believe he’s the best at what he does, and he’s doing a fantastic job preserving and expanding that world, which is wonderful for his fans.
The Superman Rivalry Is Between the Fans – not the Filmmakers

This pretty much confirms that the supposed rivalry between James Gunn and Zack Snyder regarding Superman exists only among fans, not in reality. Snyder has consistently expressed respect for Gunn’s new DC Universe, saying he was enthusiastic about its reboot. Gunn has also praised Snyder for his support during the creative process. Now, we’re seeing Snyder’s reaction to a Superman drastically different from his own – one where being kind is seen as rebellious.
This won’t settle the debate, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s natural to compare different Superman movies and have preferences – some people will always prefer one version over another, whether they like Snyder’s epic style or Gunn’s lighter approach. The real issue arises when fans become overly critical and the discussion turns negative and hostile.
Now that James Gunn has shared his positive thoughts on Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the tension between fans of the DC Universe and those who want to “restore the Snyderverse” is likely to ease. These fans are very loyal to Zack Snyder and often follow his lead. With Gunn’s statement, the rivalry seems less intense, making it more likely the two franchises can exist peacefully without constant online negativity and debate.
