Fans of Gintama have a lot to look forward to in 2026! The popular franchise, based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga in Weekly Shonen Jump, continues to deliver exciting surprises. Even years after its initial release, Gintama remains a beloved anime and manga, and fans eagerly await new projects. This year has already been great, with the anime becoming available on Netflix in January and a remake of the acclaimed ‘Yoshiwara in Flames’ arc hitting theaters in February to huge success. The series is known for its unique combination of thrilling storylines, hilarious comedy, and memorable characters.
Beyond being a comedy, the series is also a heartfelt tribute to classic action anime, making it especially enjoyable for longtime fans. The author’s first short story, Dandelion, came out in 2002 and was later included in the first volume of the series after its 2003 debut. Now, 24 years later, Netflix is adapting Dandelion into a seven-episode anime with new content. It’s set to premiere in April, though the specific date is still to be announced.
Dandelion Will Unveil New Information During AnimeJapan 2026

On February 26th, a new Twitter account sparked excitement by sharing an image featuring artwork by Gintama’s creator, Hideaki Sorachi, hinting at a big reveal. The post quickly caught the attention of Gintama fans, successfully building anticipation. The announcement came on February 27th, and so far, only a key visual has been released. A trailer is expected to be shown at Anime Japan, as confirmed by the official X account, which also announced they will be presenting at the event.
This huge anime and manga convention is a major event, frequently used by studios to share exciting news and previews. In 2026, over 120 companies – including industry leaders like Aniplex Inc., KADOKAWA Corporation, and TOHO animation – will be present. The convention will take place at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan, with public access on March 28th and 29th, followed by industry-focused days on March 30th and 31st.
What Is Dandelion About?

This story follows Angels who work in the Send-Off Department of the Japanese Angel Federation. Tetsuo Tanba and Misaki Kurogane are responsible for finding spirits that are stuck on Earth, unable to find peace after death. While Angels usually guide these souls quickly, Tanba and Kurogane prefer to spend time with each spirit, helping them resolve the regrets that are keeping them from moving on. They’re dedicated to providing support and ensuring each spirit finds closure.
Gintama Creator Opens Up About The Anime Adaptation

I saw that along with the announcement, the official X account posted a message from the creator, Sorachi, and the whole team. According to a translation from Oricon, Sorachi said he usually cringes when he looks back at his early work, but Netflix decided to revive it with an anime adaptation and even add to the original story. He joked that Netflix clearly isn’t afraid to revisit the past! He did admit, though, that he might use this chance to reconnect with those characters after twenty years.
After over twenty years, Hideaki Sorachi is playfully discussing his very first manga finally getting an anime adaptation. While he teases Netflix with a bit of humor, he’s genuinely excited to revisit these characters after so much time.
