Cillian Murphy explains condition which finally tempted him back to Tommy Shelby for Peaky Blinders movie

Apparently, it took some convincing to get Cillian Murphy to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby. However, if anyone could pull it off, it’s the show’s creator, Steven Knight.

Cillian Murphy first played the iconic character in the BBC TV series Peaky Blinders in 2013. It was confirmed last year that he would return for the movie continuation, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, with filming starting months later.

Murphy recently told Deadline that they began developing the film around 2019-2020, going through many drafts and revisions of the script before its release.

Simply being asked wasn’t enough to convince him to return; the Academy Award winner believed the film had to prove it was necessary, especially since he considered the sixth season’s finale a perfect conclusion.

As a viewer, I always felt the show’s sixth season finale – with Tommy riding off into the countryside, leaving his fate uncertain – was perfect. It left you wondering what happened to him, and I was happy with that ambiguity. So, honestly, I felt any follow-up film really needed a strong reason to exist, and to justify disturbing that satisfying conclusion.

The movie had to be worthwhile on its own, and even better than previous installments, to get Murphy involved.

He explained that any film adaptation needed to be on par with, and even better than, the original series. While the series already felt very film-like, he believed they needed to expand the scope and scale of the story.

According to Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the potential for a larger movie budget is a key reason to continue the Shelby family’s story on the big screen.

He pointed out that having a bigger budget allows for more realistic action sequences – viewers can see the explosion happen, rather than just being told about it. He also thinks this level of detail makes the project more appealing to actors.

Okay, so I just heard the news – Peaky Blinders is coming back! Netflix is bringing it to cinemas next week, March 6th, and then it’ll hit the streaming service on March 20th. I’m already marking my calendar – can’t wait!

Alongside Cillian Murphy’s return, other beloved actors will reprise their roles, including Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg, Sophie Rundle as Tommy Shelby’s sister Ada, and Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong.

The cast is also growing with some big names joining, including Tim Roth, Barry Keoghan, and Jay Lycurgo.
