Although HBO Max is popular for shows like The Pitt and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, not all of its excellent series have become huge successes. Some of the platform’s best shows haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve, and that’s definitely the case with Infinity Train, a fantastic four-part sci-fi thriller.
Infinity Train Was an Absolute Revelation When It First Released
Originally a short film in 2016, Infinity Train became a mini-series in 2019, showcasing Cartoon Network’s ability to push boundaries with shows for families.
The first season of the show centers around a girl named Tulip who ends up traveling on the Infinity Train. Each train car is like a separate, small world, complete with its own unique rules and societies. These worlds vary wildly, ranging from lighthearted fantasy to unsettling science fiction, and sometimes even venturing into truly frightening territory.
Although the first season of Infinity Train is already excellent, the show truly found its stride creatively in later seasons. Throughout the series, it skillfully explores difficult topics like identity and trauma.
Despite being loved by fans and critics, Infinity Train struggled with various challenges.
Infinity Train’s Move To HBO Max Was Turbulent
The third season of Infinity Train premiered on HBO Max in 2020. Although it was a shift from traditional network television, the move made sense. Without the limitations of family-friendly programming, the season was able to explore more mature themes, making it one of HBO Max’s standout shows.
Even though viewers enjoyed the third season of Infinity Train, the show faced an uncertain future. Despite efforts by creator Owen Dennis to save it, the series was canceled before a fourth season could air.
It was already pretty upsetting to hear about the show ending, but things got even worse when Infinity Train was taken off HBO Max in August 2022. It felt like a double hit, honestly – losing the show and easy access to what was already made.
As of today, you can only stream Infinity Train on Prime Video, where each episode costs 99 cents to rent. With 40 episodes in total, that’s a pretty reasonable price.
Infinity Train’s Cancellation Still Hurts 5 Years Later
With so many streaming shows relying on familiar stories and characters, Infinity Train stood out as a completely original series that felt surprisingly innovative.
Cartoon Network was having a lot of success when Infinity Train first came out. Shows like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gumball, and Over the Garden Wall had already become hugely popular and pushed the boundaries of what animated shows for younger viewers could achieve. Infinity Train felt like a natural continuation of that creative energy.
The show’s sci-fi premise was really engaging, and the characters felt well-developed and believable. Although Infinity Train dealt with some serious themes, it always did so in a way that was suitable for its young audience, without being overly dramatic.
When it was originally released, Infinity Train was completely unique, and nothing quite like it has appeared since. Regardless of why HBO Max decided to cancel the show, it’s disappointing to see such a creative and vibrant project end.
