With Paramount’s recent acquisition effectively ending the proposed Warner Bros. and Netflix deal, DC fans are now wondering what the future holds for their favorite characters. Many believe Paramount’s takeover could lead to James Gunn’s departure due to differing visions for the franchise. While Gunn has been focused on a hopeful and optimistic portrayal of Superman, fans of the darker, more realistic DC Universe created by Zack Snyder are hoping Paramount will revive that style.
Despite a friendly relationship with James Gunn, Zack Snyder continues to fuel speculation among fans about the future of his vision for the DC Universe—often called the ‘Snyderverse.’ In a recent podcast interview on Happy Sad Confused, Snyder didn’t rule out a potential return to his established storyline. He explained, ‘I would never say there was no way,’ referencing his involvement with the original Justice League film. He also confirmed he and Gunn have discussed possibilities, stating, ‘We’ve absolutely talked about it quite a bit… Whatever form it would take.’
What Would Zack Snyder’s DC Return Look Like?

Zack Snyder recently shared thoughts suggesting his original vision for the DC Universe wasn’t so different from James Gunn’s, particularly regarding the core purpose of the characters. Snyder explained, “These heroes resonate with people because, ultimately, they’re meant to inspire and affirm what it means to be human – to give meaning to life’s journey. They’re really a reflection of all of us.”
Zack Snyder explained that he believes the DC characters should be interpreted by various filmmakers. He acknowledged that James Gunn has already taken the characters in a new direction, and future directors will likely do the same. Snyder feels this is a natural progression, pointing out that filmmakers like Richard Donner, Tim Burton, and Christopher Nolan previously found success with these characters, and he shouldn’t be the definitive version.
Zack Snyder spoke positively about James Gunn, praising him as “cool” and acknowledging the continued interest in Snyder’s own previous DC films. He called Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie “amazing” and expressed his support for Gunn and the new DC Universe. Snyder is excited to see what Gunn does next, describing his vision as unique and impactful, and ultimately beneficial for fans. It seems Snyder has accepted moving on from the DCEU, but remains open to continuing his vision through other mediums like comics, animation, or even a Broadway musical.
