Electronic Arts (EA) will start taking the servers offline for one of its games in April. Currently, only one gaming platform has announced this change, but others are expected to do so soon. Given the game originally launched in 2014, it’s not unexpected that support is winding down.
Electronic Arts (EA) has quietly updated its list of games with online services being discontinued. This time, it’s Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare, with servers starting to shut down on April 28th, beginning with the PS3 version. While the Xbox 360 servers are expected to follow, the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions may remain online for a while longer. However, EA usually shuts down all versions of a game eventually, so those platforms will likely be affected in the coming months or years.
PS3 Servers Begin the Process
Honestly, I’m a little confused why EA is starting to shut down servers on the PS3 first. And it’s frustrating to see them go offline at all! I’m guessing it’s either because some licensing deal is ending, or they’ve realized it’s just costing them more to keep the servers running than they’re making. Plus, keeping old servers up is a security headache, especially with outdated hardware. It just feels like they’re not prioritizing us older gamers.
2014 Multiplayer Third-Person Shooter
If you haven’t played it before, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare is a multiplayer shooter where you play in third-person and also build defenses, created by PopCap Vancouver and published by EA. It came out in 2014 as the third game in the Plants vs. Zombies series and was followed by Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 in 2016. The game received scores between 69 and 78 on Metacritic and proved popular with players. It was a decent success for EA, which led to the release of the sequel two years later.
The game initially launched as an exclusive for Xbox One and Xbox 360. Several months later, it became available on PC, followed by PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
I’m still a big fan of Plants vs. Zombies, and it’s cool to see the series is still going! Last year they released a mobile version of Plants vs. Zombies 3, but it was a limited launch, and sadly, it looks like a full release has been cancelled. They did release a really nice remaster of the original 2009 game – called Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted – in 2025, which I’ve been enjoying. Honestly though, it feels like the series isn’t quite as huge as it used to be, which is a little sad.
