Death Note Announces Surprise 2026 Comeback

As a huge fan, I’ve always thought Death Note is one of those anime that always comes up when people debate the best shows ever made! We’ve seen a few live-action versions over the years, both in Japan and here in the West, but get ready for something completely different! I’m so excited to share that a brand new stage performance is coming in 2026! That’s right, Death Note is heading back to the stage, and this time it’s a musical! I can’t wait!

Based on the popular manga and anime, Death Note The Musical first debuted in Japan in 2015 and has since been performed around the globe, including in Russia, the UK, and South Korea. Anime fans in London will soon have a chance to see a unique stage version of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s story, as performances begin at the Barbican Theatre on July 30th and run until September 12th. Interestingly, the production team includes designer Jon Bausor, who previously worked on the stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.

Death Note’s Live-Action Works

As a huge fan of Death Note, I’ve followed all the live-action attempts, and honestly, most have been pretty divisive! Japan’s had a bunch of films, and even Netflix took a swing at it with a movie directed by Adam Wingard, who also did Godzilla vs. Kong. But, let’s just say the Netflix film didn’t exactly win over the fanbase – it’s often cited as an example of how not to adapt anime. Interestingly, before things went quiet, Netflix announced that the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, were developing a new Death Note TV series! We haven’t heard much about that project since the initial announcement, which is a bit of a bummer.

Since Netflix announced its live-action adaptation of the anime, the creators of Stranger Things haven’t shared many updates. They’ve recently signed an exclusive deal with Paramount, which makes it less likely this series will actually be made. However, given how popular the anime is, we still anticipate seeing the story of Light and Ryuuk brought to life in a new live-action format.

Anime adaptations as musicals aren’t new – shows like Attack on Titan, Sailor Moon, and Spy x Family have all been staged with musical numbers. Death Note is just the latest example. While many of these musicals haven’t come to North America, fans are hoping the Death Note musical will return to Western stages.
