A popular game series originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2005 has returned with a new version for the PS5, and it’s quickly becoming one of the best games of 2026. The PS2 remains the best-selling video game console ever, thanks to its incredible selection of games. While fans of classic RPGs or 3D platformers might have a soft spot for the original PlayStation, most people who remember the PS2 fondly have good reason – it was packed with amazing titles. Many of these beloved games and series disappeared for several generations, but now, capitalizing on nostalgia, they’re making a comeback on the PS5 and other platforms.
The Tokyo Extreme Racer series started as a Sega exclusive, but in 2001, Genki shifted it to PlayStation 2 with Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Zero. Over the next four years, they released several more games – Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2 – all for PlayStation. After that, the series went silent on PlayStation. In 2006, Import Tuner Challenge was released exclusively for Xbox 360, but after that, the series largely disappeared except for a few mobile games. Now, the series is making a comeback.
A Classic Racing Series Revived
The popular racing series, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, made a comeback in 2025, developed by Genki using Unreal Engine 5. It initially launched on PC in September 2025, but is now available on PS5, where it’s already a hit with PlayStation gamers.
The arcade racer Tokyo Xtreme Racer is getting excellent reviews on the PlayStation Store, with a 4.76 out of 5 rating based on almost 1,000 user reviews. It costs $49.99. This positive reception isn’t a surprise, as the game received similar praise when it was released on Steam last year, earning a 95% approval rating from nearly 10,000 reviews. That score gave it an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating – the highest possible on Steam. Players seem to love that the game perfectly captures the feel of arcade racers from the early to mid-2000s, a period many consider the golden age of the genre. They say it successfully recreates that classic experience, something that hasn’t been done well in recent years.
Plus, the game is optimized for the PS5 Pro right from the start. While that might not sound significant, most new PS5 games don’t have this optimization immediately, making it a great feature for players with the upgraded console.
If you haven’t heard about this game on PlayStation 5, don’t worry – it hasn’t been promoted much. Surprisingly, PlayStation hasn’t even released a trailer, despite it being a major release this month.
