Adult Swim Confirms Release Date for Final Smiling Friends Episodes

The animated series Smiling Friends will conclude after its current run on Adult Swim. The network has announced the release date for the final two episodes, which were created during the third season but haven’t been shown yet. This news follows an announcement from the show’s creators that the series is ending after season three, surprising many fans.

Although Season 3 of Smiling Friends finished airing on Adult Swim last year, creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel recently announced that two more episodes were completed but hadn’t been released yet. Now, following confirmation that the show is ending its run on Adult Swim, those final two episodes will premiere on April 12th.

Smiling Friends Final Episodes Release Date Confirmed With Adult Swim

Adult Swim announced that the last two episodes of Smiling Friends Season 3 will air on April 12th, which is both good and sad news. While fans will get two more episodes, the creators, Hadel and Cusack, won’t be making any more after this. They’ve clarified that these episodes aren’t meant to be a grand finale—they were simply completed last year but weren’t released until now.

According to Hadel and Cusack, the two upcoming episodes are part of the ten made for Smiling Friends Season 3, and Hadel calls them ‘leftovers.’ These episodes don’t share a common theme and aren’t intended as series finales. Still, they’ll be enjoyable new content for fans, especially since the show won’t be releasing anything else for a long time. This is unexpected news, given that Smiling Friends has already been renewed for Seasons 4 and 5.

Why Is Smiling Friends Ending?

Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, the creators of Smiling Friends, have been upfront about their plans for the show’s ending. In an interview with ComicBook before the third season, Cusack explained they want the series to finish while it’s still strong and avoid disappointing fans. They’d rather end it before it feels like they’ve overstayed their welcome, as it’s often difficult to pinpoint exactly how long a show should run – it’s more about a gut feeling.

I recently read the explanation from the creators of Smiling Friends about why they decided to end the show. Apparently, after finishing Season 3, both Zach and Cusack felt pretty exhausted from working on it for so many years, but also really proud of what they’d accomplished. Cusack said they both just had this shared feeling that Season 3 felt like a good place to stop.
