HBO’s The Last of Us will be back for a third season, but some fans are concerned about what’s to come. The first season was a hit, but the second season, which was based on the first half of the game The Last of Us Part II, wasn’t as well-received. Now, season 3 faces some challenges, leaving many viewers anxious about its direction.
A third season of The Last of Us has the potential to be excellent, and fans should remain optimistic. Unlike season 2, it may have more freedom to differ from the original story, potentially leading to a more satisfying result. However, the show still faces some challenges it needs to address.
3) Neil Druckmann Has Left The Last Of Us Season 3

Neil Druckmann, the writer and co-director of both The Last of Us games, was heavily involved in the HBO series, which reassured fans concerned about staying true to the source material. He served as a writer and co-showrunner alongside Craig Mazin for the first two seasons. However, Druckmann has left the show after season 2, making Mazin the sole showrunner for season 3. While the show’s quality likely won’t suffer, it will be interesting to see how season 3 develops without one of its original creative leaders.
2) The Last Of Us Season 3 Will Focus On Abby’s Story

Season one of The Last of Us adapted the complete story of the first game, but the show is handling The Last of Us Part II differently. The sequel’s story will be spread across multiple seasons. Season two covered the start of the game and Ellie’s initial three days in Seattle, and it actually showed more of Abby’s story than the game did. The season ended by shifting the focus to Abby’s point of view, hinting that season three will begin with Abby’s experiences on her first day in Seattle.
As a huge fan of The Last of Us, I was really invested in Abby’s story in the game, but I know a lot of people struggled with having to play as the character who hurt Joel so badly. Hearing that Season 3 will center on Abby is interesting, but also a little daunting. It means we’ll likely be leaving Jackson and the characters we’ve come to love behind, and following a whole new group. Her storyline in the game went in a very different direction from what we’ve seen on the HBO show so far, so I think Season 3 could be a real gamble – especially for viewers who haven’t played the game and aren’t familiar with where her story goes.
1) Part II’s Conclusion Will Either Be Rushed Or Stretched Out

Abby’s story in Seattle is just one part of a larger narrative. After her events conclude, the story shifts to Ellie and Dina, who return to Jackson. Dina gives birth, and Ellie eventually decides to resume her pursuit of Abby, traveling to California. There, she finds Abby and Lev, confronts the Rattlers, and ultimately faces Abby in a final, decisive battle.
A significant portion of The Last of Us Part II has fans wondering how it will be adapted into the HBO series. Adding it to the end of season 3 might feel too fast-paced, similar to the rushed feeling some had with season 1’s finale. But it’s also too much content to fill a whole fourth season. It’s currently unclear how the show will successfully conclude its adaptation of this part of the game.
