Major Shonen Jump Franchise to End After 27 Years (Confirmed With Surprise Update)

A popular sequel series from Shonen Jump will conclude with just six remaining chapters, marking the end of a 17-year run for the continuation and a 27-year legacy for the original series. This ending is part of a larger shift at Shueisha’s Jump magazines, which are wrapping up several long-running titles and launching new ones.

The popular manga series, The New Prince of Tennis (known internationally as The Prince of Tennis II), is nearing its conclusion with only six chapters remaining. Creator Takeshi Konomi announced the upcoming ending on social media, coinciding with the 17th anniversary of the sequel and the 27th anniversary of the original The Prince of Tennis. You can find the official announcement below.

I’ve been following The New Prince of Tennis, and it looks like it’s really wrapping up! The creator, Takeshi Konomi, first mentioned ending the series last year, and now he’s confirmed it will be over in just six more chapters. He’s really building excitement for Ryoma’s final match. Unlike the original series which quickly led to a sequel, this feels like a true ending – it probably won’t be getting a continuation.

Following the original Prince of Tennis series, the sequel began publishing in Shonen Jump about a year later and has since been released in Jump SQ magazine. An anime adaptation has brought many of the sequel’s matches to life, focusing on the World Tournament, but it’s still unknown if the anime will continue to cover the rest of the story. With the manga ending in just six more chapters, a decision about the anime’s future should be coming soon.

How Will The Prince of Tennis End?

The popular manga series The Prince of Tennis originally finished in 2008, but returned with a sequel a year later. Now, as that sequel nears its end, it seems likely this will be the last time fans see Ryoma Echizen compete. Based on how other long-running sports series in the magazine have concluded, the ending will probably show Ryoma continuing to play tennis at a high level in the future.

Ryoma’s story will likely conclude with a major victory or defeat, and he’ll continue pursuing his athletic goals as an adult. However, the series won’t continue beyond that. It’s a typical bittersweet ending for sports manga in Shonen Jump, but it promises a satisfying conclusion either way.
