Many horror stories have truly terrified audiences. Another is a gruesome and mysterious thriller where characters die in ways reminiscent of the Final Destination films. Shiki is a chilling, slow-paced story set in the countryside that explores the darker side of human nature. And this year, a new horror story brings evil spirits to haunt the innocent setting of a school playground.
Horror anime is already known for being disturbing, but plenty of shows outside the horror genre can be just as unsettling and leave a lasting, creepy impression. From action-packed adventures to more mature stories or historical dramas, many anime have moments that feel as frightening and bizarre as something from the work of horror master Junji Ito.
Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture Shredded Humans Into a Bloody Mist
The 2024 series Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture is an exciting spin-off of the well-known anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, set in a different timeline. While the story mainly revolves around the political conflict between Japan and what’s left of the Britannian Empire, it also features some unexpectedly intense and violent scenes.
In the anime’s climax, Norland von Lunebelg deployed deadly, self-piloted drones designed to eliminate all life. Once activated in enemy lands, these drones consumed anyone they found—civilians and soldiers alike—completely breaking them down and dispersing their remains as a blood-colored mist that covered the area.
Cursed Spirit Rika Killed Without Hesitation in Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Jujutsu Kaisen explores a world filled with dangerous, supernatural creatures. A scene that feels particularly like a classic ghost story is the introduction of the character Rika at the beginning of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie.
Rika is a cursed spirit bound to Yuta Okkotsu. At the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, she appears suddenly to protect him from a bully. While the scene is obscured, we immediately see Yuta next to a locker overflowing with blood. When the locker door opens, the bully is revealed to be horrifically injured and unrecognizable.
No-Face Swallowed People Whole in Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away
Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away is their biggest hit, earning over $350 million around the world. Anime fans fondly remember the film’s enchanting and colorful world, into which the main character, Chihiro, is drawn. One character who stands out is No-Face, who begins as a villain but eventually becomes a companion.
No-Face becomes fixated on Chihiro, silently trailing her. After she turns him away, he remains in the deserted bathhouse one night and ensnares his first victim. Aogaeru, one of Yubaba’s employees, sneaks back into the bathhouse hoping to find gold. No-Face suddenly appears and tempts him forward with a pile of it, then quickly traps and swallows Aogaeru whole.
Edward Elric Discovered Nina’s Twisted Fate in FMA:B
Many anime fans consistently recommend Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and it’s often called a masterpiece due to its well-developed characters and exploration of serious topics. However, it also famously shocked and upset a lot of viewers with just a few key moments.
Shou Tucker is widely considered one of the most despicable characters in anime history because of his horrific act: turning his own daughter, Nina, into a chimera. He did this to keep his position as a State Alchemist. The scene was deeply disturbing, and it shocked viewers when Nina, now a chimera, spoke the words “Big Brother Ed” with a chillingly forced smile, confirming the terrible truth about what her father had done.
Turbo Granny Made a Spine-Chilling Entrance in Dandadan
Dandadan is a funny and romantic story about Momo and Okarun as they explore a strange world filled with aliens and ghosts. While the anime delves into supernatural themes, it’s not particularly scary overall. The introduction of Turbo Granny, though, was genuinely frightening, like something from a horror movie.
In the first episode, Okarun bravely entered Turbo Granny’s spooky tunnel all by himself. It was pitch black, and when he used his flashlight, he saw a trail of bloody footprints leading directly towards him – but there was no one there! Just when the tension became unbearable, Turbo Granny appeared with a frightening look, only to immediately lighten the mood with a completely bizarre and hilarious line – arguably the most memorable of the entire series.
Kelvin Delighted in Killing Children in Black Butler: Book of Circus
Black Butler is a dark and fantastical anime series centered around Ciel Phantomhive, who works as a detective for the Queen. The show explores many unsettling and sad stories, and one of these, featured in Black Butler: Book of Circus, culminates in the introduction of Kelvin, widely considered the most villainous character in the entire series.
In the climax of Book of Circus, Ciel unwillingly attends a dinner show put on by children Kelvin has kidnapped. Kelvin cruelly forces the children to perform dangerous circus stunts, each of which results in their tragic death. Throughout these horrifying events, Kelvin displays only manic glee, revealing his complete lack of empathy or regret.
Orochimaru Showed his True Face as Naruto’s Creepiest Character
Orochimaru was a key villain in the Naruto series. He was a powerful ninja exiled from Konoha for performing dangerous human experiments, all in pursuit of eternal life. During his battle with Hiruzen Sarutobi in the Konoha Crush Arc, it was revealed how he maintained his youthful appearance despite being over fifty years old.
During his battle with his old teacher, Orochimaru ripped off his own face like it was a disguise. Beneath it, he revealed the face of a woman he was using as a host body. He did this to stay alive, regularly switching bodies with young, powerful ninja – which is why he originally focused on and targeted Sasuke Uchiha.
Tomura Shigaraki Accidentally Murdered his Entire Family in MHA
Over the last ten years, My Hero Academia has become a hugely popular and important anime in the shonen genre. Many people compare it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s clear the series draws a lot of inspiration from those films. While the show is generally positive and encouraging, the story of Tomura Shigaraki is consistently dark and frightening.
When Shigaraki was a young child, his dangerous power activated by accident. He was hugging his dog when it suddenly turned to stone and fell apart. Then, the stone crumbled back into flesh, covered in blood. Unable to control this new ability, Shigaraki tragically killed the rest of his family the same way, each touch turning them to stone before they decayed.
No Anime Fan can Forget Carla Yeager’s Death in Attack on Titan
I remember when Attack on Titan first came out – it immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. It was incredibly intense, and the sheer number of shocking deaths, especially in the first season, really set it apart. The Titans were always meant to be frightening, but that first episode, right before Eren’s mother… that was truly terrifying. It’s a moment that stuck with a lot of viewers, myself included.
When Carla Yeager was trapped under debris, a glimmer of hope appeared as Hannes raced forward to intercept the approaching Titan. But the Titan’s terrifying, toothy grin instantly paralyzed him with fear. Eren was then left to helplessly witness the Titan brutally kill his mother, taking its first bite of her body.
Grave of the Fireflies Showed the World a Devastating Type of Horror
I’ve always considered Grave of the Fireflies to be Studio Ghibli’s most heartbreaking film, and honestly, one of the saddest I’ve ever seen. It tells the story of Seita and Setsuko, two young siblings struggling to survive after losing their parents in World War II. It’s a really powerful depiction of the horrors of war and the devastating impact it has on people – the loss and suffering experienced by everyone, no matter which side they’re on.
Seita’s mother was seriously wounded, and despite initial hope, she died shortly after seeing her children again. Seita then witnessed her mother’s body, which was already decaying, being placed in a mass grave to be burned. This scene isn’t meant to be terrifying, but rather a stark reminder of the harsh realities of a devastating time in history.
