It’s no surprise that fantasy games are so popular – video games let creators build anything they can imagine! This allows for huge, immersive worlds with magic, unique creatures, and compelling villains. However, building these detailed worlds requires a lot of time and resources, which can lead to long waits for sequels or, sometimes, cancelled games.
Okay, so I’ve been thinking about fantasy games I really want to see a sequel for, and I’ve made a list of six. I’ve even tried to guess which ones we’re most likely to actually get – here’s how I’d rank them, from most to least hopeful!
6) Fable

I’ve been a huge fan of Fable since the third game came out way back in 2010. We’ve had a couple of smaller games since then – like Fable: The Journey and the card game Fable Fortune – but for years, everyone was hoping for a proper new Fable game. Finally, in 2020, it was officially announced at the Xbox Games Showcase! Microsoft is teaming up with Playground Games to completely reboot the series, and I couldn’t be more excited!
The new Fable game is currently planned for release in 2026, but its development hasn’t been easy, so the release date could be delayed. However, it likely won’t be cancelled. Microsoft has already invested in trailers featuring well-known comedians Richard Ayoade and Matt King, suggesting they’re confident in the game’s potential.
5) The Witcher IV

It’s understandable that there was a ten-year gap between main Witcher games, especially considering CD Projekt Red also developed the large-scale Cyberpunk 2077 during that time, establishing a second major franchise for them. However, it was somewhat unusual that the entire four-season Witcher Netflix series aired and concluded between releases of the main Witcher games.
Early signs are very promising, and this next game will let you play as Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter, instead of him. However, it won’t be available until at least 2027. The developers, CD Projekt Red, are being careful to avoid the issues that plagued the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, and it might even be delayed until 2028. They’re taking the time needed to get it right.
4) Suikoden VI

It’s becoming less and less likely we’ll see a proper new Suikoden game, but anything is possible. The series is considered one of the greatest RPGs, known for its huge number of characters and exciting story. Unfortunately, fans haven’t seen a brand new installment since 2006. Still, the release of an HD remaster of the original two games in 2025 did offer a glimmer of hope.
It’s unlikely we’ll see a proper remaster of the original Suikoden games. Around the time the remaster was released, Konami announced Suikoden: Star Leap, a new mobile game set between Suikoden I and V. While it’s officially part of the Suikoden story, this game is a “gacha” title – a free-to-play game focused on collecting characters – and isn’t what fans were hoping for. Currently, the best chance for a revival seems to hinge on Star Leap being very successful, which might encourage Konami to revisit the original series. Alternatively, you can check out Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the last game worked on by Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama before his passing; it’s considered a spiritual successor to the series.
3) Panzer Dragoon Saga 2

While Panzer Dragoon Orta was released as a sequel in 2002, it was quite different from the original Panzer Dragoon Saga. Orta returned the series to its original, action-focused gameplay, moving away from the role-playing elements that fans loved in Saga.
Don’t expect to see another game in the Saga series anytime soon. After the original game was finished, Sega shut down the development team, Team Andromeda, and many of its leaders moved to Konami. The game hasn’t been re-released for many years, and despite a remake of the first game in 2020, Sega doesn’t appear interested in continuing the series.
2) Actraiser 3

The original Actraiser brilliantly combined fast-paced platforming with strategic god-game elements, making it a truly innovative title for the Super Nintendo and a major hit for Enix. The sequel, however, removed the god-game portions, resulting in a simpler, though still enjoyable, platforming experience.
Both games did well, and the developers, Quintet, initially planned a remake for the Sega Saturn called Act Remix. Unfortunately, that project was cancelled. They then started working on a third game for the Nintendo 64, but it never came to fruition. Since then, there’s been little news about the series. It’s disappointing to see such a promising series fall apart, especially with multiple attempts at a sequel ultimately failing. While a remake, Actraiser Renaissance, was released in 2021, it arguably shouldn’t have been made.
1) Next Chrono Trigger

It’s a shame we never got a third ActRaiser, but the lack of another Chrono Trigger game is truly frustrating. Chrono Trigger is considered one of the best RPGs ever made, with a unique blend of fantasy and science fiction, and it’s surprising Square Enix only released two games in the series. Considering the game features character designs by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, it had all the potential to become a massively popular franchise.
We ended up with Chrono Cross, a good game that continued the series, but didn’t really expand beyond that. It almost feels like the Final Fantasy team intentionally held it back. Chrono Trigger remains a fan favorite, and Square Enix hasn’t revisited it much. Hopefully, their recent trend of remaking classic games will eventually include Chrono Trigger. If enough people buy it, maybe the company will finally realize how great their original SNES game was and make more like it.
