Okay, so I’ve been keeping an eye on this survival game, and it’s officially at the top of Steam’s wishlist! That means it’s going to have a huge launch when it finally comes out this year – fingers crossed it doesn’t get delayed, though. It’s a sequel to a game that did pretty well on Steam, so I figured people would be excited, but I’m honestly a little surprised it’s the most wishlisted game right now. The first one was good, but it wasn’t a massive hit. It peaked around 50,000 players, which is decent, but not top-tier, you know? Still, the hype is real!
If you haven’t heard, the most wishlisted game on Steam right now is Subnautica 2, the follow-up to the popular 2018 game Subnautica. Like the first game, Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure where you’ll explore the ocean, gather resources, and build vehicles, tools, and bases. You can play solo or team up with friends.
Will it Deliver?
It’s great to be eagerly awaited, but actually meeting expectations is the real challenge. The development of Subnautica 2 has faced some difficulties, leading to concerns about whether Unknown World Entertainment can pull it off.
The American game studio was founded in 2001, but they didn’t become well-known until the release of Subnautica. The game was a huge success, selling millions of copies due to its unique gameplay and high quality. Critics and players alike loved it, as shown by its score of 87 on Metacritic and a 96% positive rating from over 172,000 Steam users.
Following the initial success, the studio has found it difficult to repeat that achievement, especially with increasing competition in the gaming market. While their 2021 spin-off, Subnautica: Below Zero, was a good game, it didn’t reach the same heights as the original, reflected in its scores – 82 on Metacritic and 89% positive user reviews on Steam. In 2024, they tried something completely different with Moonbreaker, a turn-based strategy game. While experimentation is understandable, this new title didn’t perform as well as their previous releases in terms of sales and reviews.
I’m really excited for Subnautica 2 – it looks like it’s shaping up to be a great game! But I’m also wondering if it can live up to the incredible success of the first one. Looking at how many people have already added it to their Steam wishlists, it seems like it might actually be even more popular. Still, what really matters is the final quality of the game, and honestly, the studio hasn’t quite hit the same high mark since Subnautica first blew everyone away.
