I still remember when Coach first came on TV 37 years ago! Little did we know then that it would launch the careers of two amazing voice actors. The show was a really funny sports comedy about a college football coach at a smaller school, and it followed him, his assistants, and his family as they dealt with all the craziness of college sports. It ran for nine seasons – 200 episodes! – on ABC, and Craig T. Nelson was perfect as Coach Hayden Fox. The whole cast was hilarious, and it’s amazing to see how many of them went on to become big stars in TV and movies.
Interestingly, two actors from the show Coach went on to become hugely popular voice actors in animation. Craig T. Nelson, who played Coach, later voiced Mr. Incredible in Pixar’s The Incredibles. Bill Fagerbakke, who played Coach’s assistant Dauber, eventually became famous as the voice of Patrick Star on SpongeBob SquarePants.
Coach Debuted 37 Years Ago and Starred the Voices of Patrick Starfish & Mr. Incredible

The sitcom Coach centered around Craig T. Nelson’s character, Hayden Fox, and his job as the head coach of the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles football team. A humorous subplot involved Hayden’s father unexpectedly enrolling in college to be near him, while Hayden dealt with the challenges of watching his daughter grow up. Much of the show’s comedy came from the dynamic between Hayden and his assistant coaches, Luther Van Dam and Michael “Dauber” Dybinski. Dauber, played by Bill Fagerbakke, was a lovable but somewhat naive athlete who hadn’t yet finished college.
What really stands out is what Fagerbakke did after Coach ended. The show finished in 1997, and just two years later, he began voicing Patrick Star on the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. Along with Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, he’s become one of the most recognizable voices in animation.
After finding fame in the sitcom Coach, Craig T. Nelson continued to work steadily in both films like The Family Stone and Blades of Glory, and television shows such as The District and Parenthood. He’s also well-known for his voice work as Mr. Incredible in the popular Pixar films The Incredibles and its sequel. Though perhaps not as famous as his role as Patrick Starfish, voicing Mr. Incredible was a fantastic performance that highlighted the talent of this beloved actor from the 90s.
Interestingly, Craig T. Nelson and Bill Fagerbakke, known for their roles in Coach, had a reunion on the show Young Sheldon. In Season 5, episode “Pish Posh and a Secret Back Room,” Nelson, who appeared in multiple episodes of Young Sheldon, met with a police officer friend—played by Fagerbakke—after Annie Potts’ character opened a hidden gambling room. Fagerbakke’s character is named Jake.
