One of the MCU’s Best Phase 4 Releases Was Completely Rewritten Less Than 2 Weeks Before it Filmed

Fans were almost deprived of one of Marvel’s most beloved couples due to the studio’s tendency to start filming before the script was fully finished, often requiring significant changes during production. However, the shift from making movies to creating series highlighted the flaws in this approach, forcing them to change their strategy.

The show Hawkeye underwent a significant creative reset right before production began. Writer Andrew Guest shared on The Watch podcast that he received a call from Joe Russo, a former colleague from Community, asking him to help revamp the dynamic between Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. According to Guest, Trinh Tran, a Marvel executive, told him, “We start shooting in New York in a week and a half, and we want to rewrite the whole thing.”

Hawkeye Could Have Gone Very Wrong

I joined the project quite late in the process. They’d already had a team of writers, and the script had been revised a few times after that. Honestly, I was their last resort to ensure they could actually finish filming. There was a tendency to think they could solve problems during production, and that was definitely true with Hawkeye. The character Hailee Steinfeld played was initially written as too young, and the chemistry between her and Jeremy Renner wasn’t quite working. There were also unnecessary plot twists that complicated things. It was a collaborative effort; I needed their input as much as they needed mine, and we managed to work through it together.

Luckily, the changes they made really paid off. The connection between Kate Bishop and Clint Barton became one of the most memorable parts of the show, and Kate herself quickly became a fan favorite. Critics loved it, giving it a 92% score, and fans are eager to see these characters shine in future stories. As Erin Maxwell from LA Weekly put it, while the show might not be as complex as WandaVision or have the same large-scale impact as Loki, it’s relatable and genuinely human.
